yeah thats what i mean, i updated my kernel and rebuilt the initramfs and it just exploded again in the same way. the modules were definitely in the initramfs but it just would not load them and refused to continue booting
<chadmed>
i dont have time to debug it this time though, im back at uni for the next 13 weeks

I haven't seen that (yet). my problems with dracut were limited to getting it to work for the livecd on the mac mini
<chadmed>
its stuff like this that makes you wonder how we ever managed to get computers to do anything reliably
<chadmed>
same kernel config, same dracut config, same machine, same u-boot+grub versions, just decides to stop working :P

chadmed_: For Debian I had the same issue. Saw nothing beyond grub efi. The issue for me was that with the default asahi config it was using zstd compressed modules that was confusing the initramfs utility of Debian. As a result the initrd was empty and no display output. After I changed the module compression to none, it worked for me.

we've taken care of that in gentoo by rebuilding kmod with zstd support, also it usually works
<Glanzmann>
I see.
<Glanzmann>
So something else than. Strange.
<Glanzmann>
jannau: Btw. How did you resolve the boot chain for gentoo. Last time I tried to package gentoo, there was no efi grub and I decided that someone else should do it. :-)
<Glanzmann>
Did you package efi grub?

<_jannau_>
efi grub is since ages in the normal grub ebuild via GRUB_PLATFORMS expanded USE flags
