chadmed: is there any chance you can spend some time on my request on the nss bug
<sam_>
i'm swamped but i can find time to look into it if I have a definite way to reproduce it
<sam_>
but not to mess around atm trying to get to that point
<chadmed>
sam_: i can have a play tomorrow night or perhaps later evening. from what i recall i didnt do anything special and at one point this was simply blocking me installing enough of a system to even reboot out of the livecd
<chadmed>
ill make a fresh stage3 chroot later and see whats up though
<sam_>
thanks a bunch
<sam_>
I did try a bit but I couldn't get there and couldn't spend more time on it
<sam_>
(I was trying on amd64 though and perhaps the original report is actually either different or the same thing but linked in a way we don't get, and your/leio's issue is suff. different that I was going about it the wrong way)
<sam_>
I was telling leio, the actual thing which is crashing is *insanely* brittle
<sam_>
and I'm not 100% convinced it's not snakeoil
<chadmed>
its been years at this point since i even looked at an amd64 machine but i have a very fuzzy and vauge memory of this happening on a ryzen system i owned
<sam_>
it's some FIPS signing BS but I have no idea how that can POSSIBLY be a thing if you're building from source where the source might change arbitrarily
<sam_>
but of course crashing is bad
<sam_>
just mean i wouldnt be surprised if nss is doing shenanigans
<chadmed>
yeah i reckon its 1000% bullshit that we have to deal with it at all but both nss and ff unconditionally try to shlibsign in their builds
<chadmed>
who would win in a fight FIPS vs /etc/portage/patches
<sam_>
:)

sam_: couldnt repro with a clean stage3 + gcc. tried rebuilding xz-utils and zlib, then tried with -flto. nss builds fine in all cases
<chadmed>
i can only assume there is some stupid ABI break with something else being built by clang? no idea
<sam_>
it's fine if the instructions include "build X with clang first"
<sam_>
also keep in mind that static libs include LTO gunk
<sam_>
which may or may not be relevant
<chadmed>
ill keep digging tomorrow its getting late. not yet at the stage of building with static-libs, just trying to get nss to fail without that first
<chadmed>
next steps will be bootstrapping clang and then rebuilding zlib and xz-utils with it
<sam_>
thanks
<sam_>
if you can, please try to avoid introducing compiler-rt and libcxx and friends (of course zlib & xz-utils are C, but still)
<sam_>
but if you need to and then have to backtrack to figure out what introduces it then so be it
<chadmed>
i never use libcxx anyway
<sam_>
ok :)
