<iyes> So I have been using a build of mesa compiled from Alyssa's tree for Honeykrisp for a few months now, for tinkering around on my system. I need a vulkan driver for some game engine experimentation and development I am doing. The old HK snapshot worked perfectly well for my purposes.
<iyes> It was enough to set a special env var to get it to enumerate.
<iyes> I just built mesa from git, because I want to try the new upstreamed driver. But it seems like that is not enough anymore.
<iyes> What is needed to get it to enumerate / get the new Honeykrisp to work?
<leio> iyes: which git? upstream one doesn't have the UAPI bits and does not work for anything on the machine
<iyes> yes i tried upstream. i guess that would explain why it didnt work
<iyes> so i need to build another repo? or get special patches from somewhere?
<iyes> i looked at asahi/mesa and it doesn't seem to have honeykrisp in it at all. and i also looked at alyssa/mesa, there is an honeykrisp/upstream branch, but that has exactly the same commits as upstream, nothing different
<j`ey> iyes: maybe you just have to wait until it gets merged to upstream, and then back into asahi/mesa
<iyes> i mean, i guess, if i cant get this working, it's not a super big deal. i still have my old build of mesa with honeykrisp, which works for me, and i can keep using that until HK is officially released for end users.
<iyes> i was just kinda excited to try the new version and see how it compares
<cy8aer> Hm, looks like you need the uapi patch which is just prepared. Probably 6.10.1 together with the official mesa tree end of the week. Stay tuned!
<iyes> oh awesome! looking forward to it
<cy8aer> (linux asahi-6.10.1-1 and mesa>asahi-20240727 - both not published!)

<jannau> honeykrisp is merged in upstream mesa, so it still needs at least need a rebase of asahi/mesa but I would imagine that it will not build by default for some time after that
<jannau> mostly unrelated to the uapi changes we will push in the next few days
<iyes> i understand that. i know it is not going to be released for end users / in the normal packages for a while.
<iyes> i am just curious if there is a working git branch or something i can build for my own dev/experimentation purposes
<jannau> please do not make up non-existing / not yet existing tags
<cy8aer> sorry
<iyes> like i said, i already have a dev environment with a mesa build with the old HK branch from a few months ago, which i have been happily using so far :)
<jannau> the offical position is that if you can't figure that out on your own what you need to do it's not ready yet
<iyes> i could for the old HK ;)
<iyes> i am not a mesa dev (tried to contribute once, but it was too difficult for me, i am not good at C, just Rust)
<iyes> but even a broken and slow VK driver is infinitely more useful for me personally than no vulkan driver at all
<iyes> so, while i completely understand why the Asahi project has the official position that it does, i think it is kinda unreasonable IMO
<iyes> a bit too extreme
<iyes> but i know yall have been burned in the past by distros packaging things you didnt want ppl to use
<cy8aer> we should still stay on the state: ready when ready...
<chaos_princess> if a slow driver is better than no driver, lavapipe exists
<iyes> heh lavapipe is *too* slow.
<leio> yeah, works fine for me for getting zed to run
<iyes> i develop games using Bevy. Bevy / wgpu currently has issues that completely prevent it from running on asahi with opengl, only vulkan actually works. with lavapipe i get <5 fps and it is unusable. with the old honeykrisp branch i get >90 fps in my game. :)
<chadmed> iyes: if your dev environment with the old branch is still working then just go back to it, that simple
<iyes> so clearly the driver is good enough to actually be useful
<iyes> yep
<iyes> okay people, i dont get why yall are so hostile/defensive. i am not here to make demands of anyone.
<iyes> i will keep using my old dev environment. i was just curious about the new HK, that's all.
<cy8aer> It was my mistake, I fuelled it.
