<libv> anarsoul: as was my plan when i started down this path.
<libv> single out img with the unstable driver stack, which i had the misfortune of working with at nokia.
<libv> what i had not calculated was that arm would be _that_ hostile towards open source
<libv> and it took until 2017 for jem davies to leave his post as head of mpd
<libv> and only now, when nvidia is danger of buying arm and making mpd obsolete, are they actively thinking about it at arm
<libv> img has had the most to gain from going open source from day 1.
<libv> but they have always had excuses, like; ENOMONEY
<libv> which is much better than "i hate linux as it killed riscos"
<apritzel> libv: that's not true, nvidia has nothing to do with that
<libv> (which it didn't, but that's what the rumours about jem davies say)
<libv> apritzel: what then?
<libv> apritzel: why did it take a decade?
<libv> for some minor corrections to already publicly known information?
<apritzel> there is/was simply no business model for the current customers (Android/deeply embedded Linux) which would justify the investment
<apritzel> e.g. Allwinner won't be spending a single penny more for getting an OpenSource driver from Arm
<libv> apritzel: there was much more than that
<libv> apritzel: when did you join arm?
<apritzel> yes, but this is the money part of it
<apritzel> libv: when did you? ;-)
<libv> when codethink ran into money issues in 2012 they laid me off, as i was very unhappy with how lima was being treated
<apritzel> libv: also, wasn't this discussion about PowerVR?
<libv> the phonecall included the sentence: "we have told arm already that we are getting rid of you, so that they will do business with us again"
<libv> apritzel: i have heard from two separate sides that jem davies hates anything open source, and would block it regardless
<apritzel> I don't know about that (and wouldn't comment anyway), but I don't see how this matters now
<libv> anyway, img has been more receptive from the start, especially since they became the underdog
<libv> and the prospect of open sourcing was discussed in several all hands in the 2013-2015 era

<diego71> TIL: cedrus is in debian stable, I can watch h264 video in plain debian on a64
<gamiee> diego71: which player?
JohnDoe_71Rus has quit []
<ndufresne> gamiee: I'd recommand clapper, https://itsfoss.com/clapper-video-player/
<gamiee> so clapper supports v4l2 request api I suppose
<gamiee> (ah, it uses gstreamer, and gstreamer have plugin for v4l2 req)
<ndufresne> not sure if it's packaged in debian, but being GTK4, it will handle native texture streaming, meaning if you have working kernel driver and working gstreamer (5.9 kernel + gst 1.18, 5.14 kernel and dev release of gst), it will at least have a fast path to GL
<ndufresne> unlike Totem, which does not know what a DMAbuf is
<ndufresne> now its tricky and early to get all things working mainline
