I'm trying to debug an issue with the touchpad on an X1 Carbon 9th gen. It's registering one finger less than it should on any given touch: one finger does nothing, two moves the mouse, three scrolls, etc.

The finger display in `libinput debug-gui` shows that when I put down a second finger, the first starts showing up but the second doesn't. When I put down a third finger, the second starts showing up.

If I pick up a finger, the remainder continue to work (so I can put down a second finger, pick it up, and then move the mouse with one finger, until I pick that finger up and put it back down, at which point it no longer registers).

JoshTriplett: you can use evtest to inspect the kernel events, before libinput gets to them. libinput can't do much about it if it's further down the stack.

kernel bug, hardware bug, idk - no idea what kind of touchpad hardware is in the x1 carbon

One thing that gives me hope it might be a software bug: as far as I recall, it was working a few days ago, just not today.

1) What's the right place to go for help debugging hid-multitouch or similar? 2) Is there a way I can get the kernel to dump the "raw" information as it's read from the touchpad, to diagnose what kind of quirk it might need?

other than "linux kernel input tree", I don't have a good answer - haven't had to poke at this before. I'd probably start looking at the driver. Raw I2C frames probably won't mean much without more context anyway.
