<fliife> hi! i'm installing gentoo, followed the handbook up until kernel stuff, and following chadmed's guide using asahi-gentoosupport
<fliife> thing is when emerging asahi-meta
<fliife> there are some USE flags dependencies missing
<fliife> like dracut on linux, rustfmt and rust-src on rust-bin
<chadmed> [ebuild R ] dev-lang/rust-bin-1.77.1:stable::gentoo USE="rust-src rustfmt ???
<fliife> is that like expected ? i'll try adding them to my package.use/ and report back but this is breaking the install script (no biggie i'll just edit it)
<fliife> yes
<fliife> and also video_card_asahi on mesa
<fliife> video_cards_asahi (typo)
<fliife> worth mentionning I added the wayland global use flag during setup
<chadmed> are you going for a minimal setup or a desktop
<fliife> desktop/systemd
<chadmed> ok yeah you need those use flags
<fliife> i'll do that ty
<fliife> somewhat unrelated, but are bindist okay on asahi ? since it's a weird architecture i'm wondering if it's worth setting up
<chadmed> the machines are fully normal arm64 machines. you should have no problem with standard arm64 binpkgs
<chadmed> EXCEPT for stuff that relies on jemalloc or otherwise makes the incorrect assumption that memory pages are 4k
<fliife> which manifests itself as segfault, is that right ?
<chadmed> mostly yes but it depends
<chadmed> jemalloc will print a warning then exit cleanly
<LarstiQ> zig will reach unreachable code and stop compiling

<fliife> so... i guess i should have emerged linux-firmware before rebooting, right ?
<fliife> gentoo is up and running, without any knowledge of the available network hardware
<j`ey> linux-firmware doesn't have anything for us
<fliife> right, was there a step for networking that i missed ?
<fliife> i installed networkmanager
<fliife> but it doesn't detect any hardware
<fliife> WIFI-HW is missing, WIFI is enabled
<stintel> sys-firmware/asahi-firmware ?
<fliife> the only network interface i have is `lo`
<jannau> linux firmware provides the firmware for the ethernet adapters on desktop systems
<jannau> fliife: try `mkdir -p /lib/firmware/vendor/`
<jannau> and reboot

<fliife> jannau: uhh that worked
<fliife> why did it work ? kinda baffled
<jannau> the firmware handling is special and the initramfs mounts a tmpfs to /lib/firmware/vendor/ and copies the firmware there. This was previously an issue but I thought it was fixed
<jannau> chadmed: we should let a package (dracut-asahi or asahi-firmware) create /lib/firmware/vendor/

<leio> chadmed: dodir doesn't do anything if it doesn't have any files in it. keepdir is needed. Portage doesn't retain completely empty folders.
<leio> dodir docs spell that out too, surprised to see :)

<mkurz> The "Libreoffice App Icons" yak in need of shaving is fixed, I just tested with latest libreoffice on plasma 6: https://github.com/AsahiLinux/docs/wiki/Yaks-in-need-of-shaving also the issue itself was closed as resolved fixed: https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=125934

<mkurz> Maybe someone else can also test so it can be removed from the list
<jannau> asahi-6.8.9-6 pushed to AsahiLinux/linux. containing a revert of a commit blamed for data corruption on dm-crypt partitions

<nyaomixyz> hello everyone! sorry for the bother but today after a bit of macOS usage my display in gentoo is flickering and artifacting and the image would suddenly disappear - is this a "prepare to die" scenario? tho it won't happen on macOS
mkurz has joined #asahi-alt
<mps> idk, but my son showed to me external display flickering with macos on m1pro when have a full screen vscode with text
<mps> nyaomixyz: ^
<mps> I tried to test with linux but couldn't get HDMI display to work
<nyaomixyz> mps: in my macbook pro m1 pro the display would randomly flicker at times, but the image wouldn't go out, so I thought it must've been some kinda graphics corruption led by kwin.
<nyaomixyz> today i read the announcement on mastodon that there was a new update for m1n1 so, before starting to work on stuff, i booted macOS and I did the upgrade
<nyaomixyz> also because lately I've been using macOS so an automatic update to 14.5 could've been around the corner
<nyaomixyz> tonight I booted the machine back to Gentoo and I found the display flickering into oblivion, and the only way to get an image back is by resetting the display (eg. closing the lid and opening it again)
<nyaomixyz> I did sync and update my computer shortly after, but the symptoms are still there
<nyaomixyz> right now I am running the dist kernel 6.8.9_p3
<nyaomixyz> cc chadmed jannau
