mps_ is now known as mps
<ncopa>
mps: I think I have problems with the wlan0 interface on alpine's linux-asahi. I wonder if I miss some firmware os similar
<chadmed>
if the card is visible in userspace then your firmware is loaded fine
<ncopa>
ok. I do have a wlan0 interface
<ncopa>
but iwd fails to connect it
<mps>
ncopa: did you un-tared firmware
<ncopa>
i did an apk upgrade today, after 6+ months
<mps>
ah, obviusly yes
<mps>
iwd sometimes have issue with brcmfac as chadmed can confirm
<ncopa>
ok?
<chadmed>
it shouldnt catastrophically fail outright
<mps>
it is better with iwd 3.0 but still sometimes fails
<ncopa>
[ 492.516492] ieee80211 phy0: brcmf_cfg80211_escan_handler: invalid event data length
<ncopa>
dont know if those are relevant

aha reported few days ago
<ncopa>
ncopa-mbp14:~$ apk version iwd
<ncopa>
Installed: Available:
<ncopa>
iwd-3.0-r0 = 3.0-r0
<mps>
u154ss reported but told with iwd 3.0 it is ok
<mps>
report is in backlog here
<mps>
btw, same issue happens with old b43 driver sometimes
<mps>
on x86_64
<u154ss>
@all since my IWD 3.00 install, stability reigns. None of the dreaded -52 errors.. up to now..
<mps>
ncopa: which kernel version you installed
<ncopa>
Linux ncopa-mbp14 6.11.2-1-asahi #1-Alpine SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Sun, 06 Oct 2024 20:26:41 +0000 aarch64 Linux
<mps>
you rebuild it locally?
<ncopa>
nope
<ncopa>
from the alpine repos
<mps>
ahm, forgt to upgrade to 6.11.4
<mps>
forgot*
<ncopa>
should I try the 6.11.4?
chrisl has joined #asahi-alt
<mps>
I don't think it will make difference
<mps>
try to move few meters around :)
<mps>
this helped me sometimes
<ncopa>
meters?
<mps>
maybe you are in spot where signal have issues
<mps>
that happens to me
<mps>
when I'm in garden it works always very well
<mps>
and I also noticed that with bananapi F3 as access point it very stable but with some taiwanese access point I have problems though I installed openwrt on it
<mps>
in short, problem is known but I didn't found good solution and afaik no one was
<ncopa>
i tried to move it to 1 meter away from wifi router, and it didnt help
<mps>
what about 5-10 meters
<mps>
though it works very fine if bananapi F3 is less than 50cm away
<ncopa>
i have two other machines here (macos, linux) and they work just fine
<ncopa>
and this mbp works just fine in macos
chrisl has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<mps>
yes, my son (when here) works on macos m1pro as I do and he never have problem
<mps>
all other my arm64 machines works very fine, only problem is when running alpine asahi
<mps>
all my machines use same alpine build of iwd and same aarch64 binary
<mps>
so I guess problem is in brcmfmac driver but not sure
<ncopa>
or firmware?
<mps>
could be, but we use firmware from macos and it works fine there
<mps>
maybe firmware plus driver combo
<ncopa>
do we also update the firmware?
<ncopa>
with macos updates?
<ncopa>
maybe i have to manually update the firmware
<mps>
I don't know how often apple update firmware
<chaos_princess>
you do not have to do any firmware updates, linux always uses firmware from macos 13.5
<mps>
ncopa: when this happens I usually disable and enable phy interface with iwgtk and this often solve problem, but not always
<mps>
sometimes I simply wait or use ethernet if in hurry
<mps>
could be that some access points are not "compatible" with brcmfac
<mps>
I reported this on #iwd IRC but no one there have answered with any idea of solution
john-cabaj has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<mps>
anyway, I will upgrade kernel for alpine, just in case
<mps>
ncopa: btw, do not upgrade lsp-plugins to new, sound will not work
<mps>
some problems with them and latest wireplumber
<chadmed>
mps: which version of lsp-plugins breaks sound?
<mps>
chadmed: 1.2.19
<mps>
1.2.18 works
<chadmed>
hmm
<mps>
that is, on alpine edge
<mps>
iirc I wrote about this two weeks ago here

<ncopa>
huh, wpa_supplicant seem to work
<jannau>
good news is that next years models might stop using Broadcom wifi/bt chipsets
<jannau>
bad news it that the replacement will be Apple's own design
<ncopa>
i wonder if it maybe was networkmanager that messed up things?
<ncopa>
my network setup is a big mess
<mps>
using networkmanager with iwd is not good idea, imo
<mps>
yes, wpa_s is more stable with broadcom than iwd
<mps>
I'm preparing x86_64 machine with broadcom wifi to test iwd on it, alpine ofc
<ncopa>
hum. network manager does not work well with wpa_supplicant either

<mps>
wrong, this x86_64 machine have brcmsmac and not brcmfmac
u154ss has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<ncopa>
alright, this was depressing. I cannot get networkmanager or iwd work at all. What works is wpa_supplicant + dhcpcd. but no gui to manage wifi connecetions, which would be handy on a laptop
<ncopa>
no idea why networkmanager+wpa_supplicant does not work
<mps>
ncopa: use iwgtk
<ncopa>
but thats for iwd right?
<ncopa>
which is broken on this macbook
<mps>
yes, it is for iwd
<ncopa>
i havent been able to make iwd work at all on this machine
<mps>
for wpa_s there is wpa_gui
<mps>
I used it a lot before made iwd for alpine
<mps>
never liked complicated NM
<ncopa>
never liked or used NM either, but thought it might be work make it work
<ncopa>
after seeing a kid on youtube slaughtering alpine....
<mps>
hah, you wanted alpine for wider audience, not me ;)
<ncopa>
and I was thinking of making iwd the default wifi for alpine, but I'll probably have to drop that, if it does not work
<ncopa>
meh... this is frustrating. I know that wpa_supplicant works, just not with networkmanager
<mps>
afaik problem is only with some broadcom chips, we had no bug report for years about it
<mps>
oh, it was also once problem with one of mediatek but it was fixed very fast, similar problem
