<sven> remote access is usually not that helpful unless something very specific has to be tested fwiw
<j`ey> also remote access requires two machines, the mac and another able to run m1n1
<sven> yeah, that too

<zzywysm_> do any Apple Silicon Macs need USB_XHCI_PCI_RENESAS in their kernel config?
thomsa has joined #asahi-dev
<j`ey> no just ASMEDIA
<zzywysm_> thx
<j`ey> thomsa: you can donate hardware by donating money, so people can buy hw?
<sven> once we have thunderbolt some dock might use a renesas xhci controller I guess
<sven> dunno how likely that is though
<j`ey> I think markan only has the M3 Max model, not the Pro or base variant, which eventually he will probably want to get
<thomsa> ok, cause i bought myself a macbook m3 a few weeks ago, and realized that the limitations of MacOS is not something i want to deal with, even the hardware is great. this is my first apple device, and the reason i bought it was because of the apple silicon SoC architecture
<j`ey> thomsa: but from earlier while you were afk: https://oftc.irclog.whitequark.org/asahi-dev/2024-01-02#32792680;
<thomsa> ok i'll check that out
<j`ey> but basicaly remotely donating is not useful for the first portng steps
<thomsa> yeah i was off all day yesterday because the internet went out at my apt building
<sven> I don’t think lack of hardware is the bottleneck for initial bringup right now anyway
<thomsa> ok, i kind of figured that people would need physical access to do the low level RE
<sven> dberlin has done some initial m3 bringup work fwiw
<j`ey> (on M£ Max)
<j`ey> lol M£
<sven> :D
<thomsa> well, i suppose where should i start with the M3 pro max if i were to do some work on asahi project?
<sven> ah, I thought it was a pro but I probably misremembered
<thomsa> i have a max btw
<sven> I think there are some pull requests for m1n1 for initial m3 support
<j`ey> thomsa: all you can do right now is load (patched) m1n1..
<j`ey> you'd need a device tree for the m3 before trying to load linux
<sven> first step would be to get that running, then the next step would be to create an initial device tree for m3
<zzywysm_> clearly j`ey has money on the brain if he's dropping pound symbols...
<j`ey> zzywysm_: ;)
<j`ey> oh, linux needs to be updated for aic3 too
<sven> and then see what works and what doesn’t. usb won’t work since the tipd chip has a new bus (spmi instead of i2c)
<sven> oh, right, so first step would be to add aic3 support
<sven> Linux kinda needs a working interrupt controller to boot :D
<thomsa> all righty, aic3 support
<zzywysm_> Linux is so demanding like that
<sven> might be a good initial project as well, I think dberlin already worked out how it works and what changed
<j`ey> yup, there's a PR for AIC3 in m1n1
<thomsa> i need to figure out if i'm gonna return this thing this week though
<j`ey> ah
<thomsa> i currently don't have time to do a lot of work on asahi and other apple stuff like Metal apps and ML
<j`ey> then unless you want to get your hands dirty or dont mind waiting, it's probably worth returning
<thomsa> but i would like the hardware go towards someone who will utilize it is maximally
<j`ey> thomsa: if you want to donate it physically, I know someone that could make good use of it..
john-cabaj has joined #asahi-dev
<thomsa> can you put me in touch with them?
<j`ey> I'll PM you
<thomsa> i'm also seeing if some groups at the college i went to would want to use it
<thomsa> i've never cared about the apple world before, but i became intrigued by this architecture, and my old thinkpad has been crapping out anyway, so i bought this. i see that the hardware's great, but the software isn't there yet. (are there even any other RISC laptops available?)
<thomsa> also i should move this discussion to general shouldn't i?
eslerm has joined #asahi-dev
<kidplayer666> there aren't too many usable risc laptops available for now
<kidplayer666> you do have the surface X or whatever with the craptastic Qualcomm cpu
<kidplayer666> you do have the extremely cheap pine64.org stuff
<kidplayer666> and you apparently have a bunch of laptops maybe coming with the new somewhat competent Snapdragon Elite X processsor (is that ever a stupid name)
<sven> please move this somewhere else
<kidplayer666> alright, no problem
