Something is triggering a fault. When inserting sleeps, that just means a single frame or so is lost.

But when going at full speed, that means you get a sudden fault storm, and the kernel responds by blacklisting the process from using the GPU further (to protect the rest of the system)

which produces the symptom of freezing.

So those buffers were red herring.
