<flower_> I'm a bit confused by xdg-tools, like xdg-desktop-menu
<flower_> It seems to install to /usr/share/applications by default. But sometimes this should be /usr/local/share one would think
<flower_> Then there is also desktop-file-install, which can specify a DIR
<flower_> Other issue: xdg-icon-resource doesn't give an error when the icon does not exists.
<flower_> It could be me, but it seems strange that these tools doesn't comply to Unix standards
<flower_> At least Arduino and Processing are now installing *.desktop files to /usr/share/applications instead of /usr/local/share, thanks to xdg tools
<flower_> It's quite normal on unix/linux to post an error, when there is an error right?
<flower_> I'm a bit flabbergasted that I've to report this tbh
<daniels> flower_: please report issues to https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/xdg/xdg-utils - the developers are not here
<flower_> it's very hard in general to contact freedesktop people it seems
<flower_> I tried the mailinglist, nothing.
<daniels> mostly that's an artifact of those tools not really seeing much active work
<flower_> hm it freaks me out a bit tbh. If these tools which are made to comply to standards, causes applications to do the wrong thing or doesn't comply to normal Unix rules (print a error when there is error)... I'm getting a bit pessimistic.
<flower_> But I'm not an expert, so let's hope it's just my ignorance.
<daniels> they’re not absolutely perfect in every way
pendingchaos_ is now known as pendingchaos
<flower_> it's simple stuff. There are no excuses for it. People are firm when they ask to comply to xdg standards. Then people should expect such simple things to work.
<flower_> and that these tools doesn't implement errors that are exactly the opposite of what the project is trying to achieve
<flower_> but I've reported the issues. I'll complain to them.
<flower_> But this doesn't give freedesktop.org a good image.
<daniels> well, if there are no excuses, I look forward to your patches to fix it. it’s a community project.
<flower_> no, that's exactly the problem
<daniels> if you’d prefer it to be a commercial project, you could fund it
<flower_> the person who is responsible for that tool, should do it right or shouldn't do it at all.
<flower_> ask Red Hat ;)
<flower_> lots of these stuff comes from them I suppose?
<flower_> At least some guys seems to work for Red Hat
<daniels> you could speak to your Red Hat account manager or sales contact
<flower_> it too easy daniels
<flower_> the standard should be lifted
<flower_> :)
<flower_> seriously
<flower_> have a good day, it's probably not fair to rant you ;)
<flower_> cheers!

<imirkin> surprising that people (who know to reach out on irc) have such a misconception of how open source software development is done.
<daniels> if they think that there are 'no excuses' for that, wait till they see other software
