<DavidHeidelberg> I'm still seeing these annoying blocking of the gravatar on FDO gitlab, for the privacy reasons, would be meaningful to disable it in GitLab admin interface?
<DavidHeidelberg> Or is the feature really wanted even for exchange for a bit privacy of the users? (at least these who don't use Firefox with higher privacy settings)
<whot> DavidHeidelberg: sorry, can you clarify - you mean that the avatar is overwritten?
<DavidHeidelberg> whot: I meant disabling Gravatar service at GitLab level, as it's known for collecting users data
<DavidHeidelberg> best would be if GitLab instance could cache these avatars and then provide them to the end-users, but it's what it is..
<whot> hmm, looks like there is one checkbox for gravatar enabled/diabled and that's it
<DavidHeidelberg> yup, question is: having feature some users may like vs protect privacy of the users
<whot> beyond that I dont really have an opinion, this might be best discussed in a freedesktop issue?
<alice> how does gravatar impact privacy at all?
<DavidHeidelberg> each time you access the MR or something, they get your IP, url, which they can mix with other data which they gathering, the privacy policy is pretty: https://automattic.com/privacy/
<alice> yes, any website that you make an http request to gets that, and it's how the service works at all?
<DavidHeidelberg> IP and url is kinda nothing serious, thou they getting the data probably from multiple sources, so they can track you across lot of websites (if you don't spend effort on blocking)
<DavidHeidelberg> if you look at what they track, is a lot
<DavidHeidelberg> imho I don't think companies which selling your data can track you, sure when you push to FDO on public project, it's visible and public. Thou I don't feel is needed every time you open FDO MR it needs to be reported somewhere
<alice> but it doesn't get "reported somewhere" every time you open an "fdo mr"?
<DavidHeidelberg> alice: since gravatar loading is blocked by Firefox, it's :)
<alice> what?
<DavidHeidelberg> otherwise there would be nothing to block
<DavidHeidelberg> let me correct myself, not everytime. Everytime I open MR with at least one user using gravatar avatar.
<alice> and what do you think that does exactly?
<alice> the request to fetch a gravatar doesn't say "i opened an mr"
<alice> in fact it does not actually say anything
<DavidHeidelberg> it sends referral
<alice> the Referer: is https://gitlab.freedesktop.org not the full uri
<DavidHeidelberg> yup, I'm looking at it, that's not that terrible
<alice> (none of this is specific to gravatar, it's just default browser behaviour)
<DavidHeidelberg> sure, one thing is if you access the one specific website, or gravatar+wordpress sites gathering data about your internet activity (not one website activity)
