<mps> this, and size are reasons why I build kernels for specific SoCs and disable debug and other rarely needed features for my usage
<chadmed> mps: same and so does ~everyone running gentoo once they get comfortable with it. but this is specifically what we call a "dist kernel" which is meant to emulate a standard full-fat binary distro kernel so that new users, livecds, etc can run properly on/with almost everything
<mps> chadmed: yes, I know 'the story'. Alpine have default kernel linux-lts (Long term stable) which is bloated and imo slow, and because this I introduced linux-edge which is based on latest stable and it is small, fast and non essential features and drivers disabled
<mps> at beginning I didn't allowed or accepted any feature which I thinks is not needed but over time I started to 'gave up' and now this kernel nearing bloated and slow, though I still don't accept debugs
<mps> so I understand 'story' (quite well I think)
<chadmed> the issue we're having now is that something in the fedora kernel config completely explodes firmware loading on gentoo for brcmfmac somehow
* mps never liked Red Hat
<janneg> chadmed: it works for me. issue seems module loading
<chadmed> something to do with the vfat issue?
<chadmed> the same failure mode appears when trying to use the gentoo livecd with the fedora kernel, which is why i never bothered updating asahi-gentoosupport
<chadmed> i wonder why vfat doesnt probe automagically...
<janneg> vfat is loaded directly after nvme / sart, the first loaded modules
<janneg> I'm using sd-boot and installkernel[systemd,systemd-boot]. not sure how that would affect things
<chadmed_> i can repro with grub so i dont think its sd-boot
<janneg> my combination works. but I don't see how grub / sd-boot could affect that
<janneg> maybe installkernel with some use flag combination not calling depmod?

<nyaomixyz> hello again
<nyaomixyz> for the good news, 16-r1 works and modules autoload correctly
<janneg> hej, any changes with gentoo-kernel-6.6.0_p16-r1?
<nyaomixyz> for the meh it was always like this news, trying to debug bluetooth stutters
<nyaomixyz> someone said to turn off wifi autoscan
<janneg> ah good. I don't understand why that makes a change but the config is closer at the gentoo-kernel config
<nyaomixyz> however iw tells me the operation isn't permitted
<nyaomixyz> (running as root, i know)
<nyaomixyz> so uhm
<nyaomixyz> yeah any other leads?
<nyaomixyz> btw, for the discussion above (reading from logs)
<nyaomixyz> i am using a dist kernel first and foremost because i want to contribute to the "first time user" experience on gentoo
<nyaomixyz> then also because i am a first time user on gentoo and on asahi
<nyaomixyz> but in no way am i a first time linux user
<nyaomixyz> i could do my own config but really, i would just get the dist one and turn off some stuff
