finally got the notification that the Ultra is about to land... party time!
<marcan>
nice!
<maz>
two months between the order and the delivery... nerve wracking! ;-)
<j`ey>
maz: finished your uart adapter?
<maz>
j`ey: almost. still debugging some of the crap (most likely a combination of strong pull-ups and buggy i2c bit-banging).
<maz>
I'll still the one from the mini in the meantime.
<maz>
s/still/steal/
<maz>
(also, not enough time in the day to do the stuff I want to do...)
<j`ey>
so work through the night too! :P
<j`ey>
what does m1 studio need, the new DART driver, and thats it?
<maz>
I'd have had time when I was travelling two weeks ago, but somehow crossing airport security with a ball of wires didn't seem like a good idea...

<_jannau_>
dts and dart-t6000 brings it almost to the same level as the mini. USB-A port will not work due to missing firmware
<mps>
hmm, my son yesterday sent payment for m1 pro 16 inch and it will arrive tomorrow
<maz>
_jannau_: do you know whether that firmware is otherwise available somewhere?
<_jannau_>
maz: firmware is expected to be loaded by system firmware or rom. I found dell firmware updates for the controller but I haven't looked at it further
<maz>
_jannau_: do you have a pointer handy? I guess I could have a look (the dreaded Renesas USB controller has similar requirements).
<_jannau_>
the dell link seems bad google result. the release date was before asm3142 was announced
<_jannau_>
marcan's plan was to extract the firmware from the macos driver
dlrhw^ has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<marcan>
maz: firmware plan is to pull it from the stuff in the installer as we do for wifi/etc (and avd will be the same)
<marcan>
the installer already puts the raw kernel image in the EFI partition as a fallback so we can push an extractor to users (that will eventually be done in the installer, it's just an interim hack so that we don't have to tell existing users to reinstall, we can push a re-extractor in a package upgrade)
<maz>
marcan: I guess you'll have to RE the way the firmware is fed to the controller. the couple of firmwares I have found (thanks to _jannau_) rely on it being stored on a SPI flash, which I assume the Studia doesn't have.
<marcan>
yeah, I already looked at that, it's kind of insane
<marcan>
IIRC it involved writing word offsets to PCI config space and data to a BAR, in a weird swizzled order
<marcan>
I bought one of the standalone cards with the same chip to make sure that whatever firmware loading patch I come up with doesn't affect/break firmwareful devices
<maz>
I guess this is directly writing into the controller's own RAM. fun.
<marcan>
yup
<_jannau_>
the m1 max mac studio seems to have an USB hub with SPI rom behind the asm3142
<marcan>
huh, really
<_jannau_>
based on the template ADT
<jannau>
spi2 has a node usb3hub-fw with 'compatible = [usb3hub-fw-gl3590,spi]'
<marcan>
that's the hub, not the controller, right?
<jannau>
yes, pcie xhci controller is still ASM3142
<marcan>
oh sorry, misread your sentence
