<povik> maybe
<povik> you should write what's on your mind right away, otherwise it contributes to noise
<karpouzi> yes. thank you for that suggestion. i was wondering if anyone is still working on the USB-PD serial port device
<povik> not that i know of
<povik> myself i didn't have anything to do with it
<povik> and i think marcan but it on the back burner
<povik> s/but/put/
<karpouzi> oop, just found vdmtool
<karpouzi> did you simply use another m1 laptop as a serial port? i would guess you use m1n1 somewhere?
<ChaosPrincess> i think that most devs use the m1n1 virtual serial port
<povik> yeah, ^ over USB, i think i have been using that pretty much exclusively
<karpouzi> hmm thanks
<karpouzi> didn't know about that
V has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<sven> someone should add “add support to reset other m1 machines and enable serial to tipd” to the yaks in need of shaving
<karpouzi> what is tipd, sven?
<karpouzi> interesting, somebody added it ;)
<povik> karpouzi: tipd is the chip that implements usb-pd (and possibly other things, i wouldn't know) on the usb-c ports on the macs
<povik> it can also refer to a kernel driver of said chip
<karpouzi> i see, thanks!
<j`ey> Im assuming it's... TI PD
<karpouzi> must be. i will brb
V has joined #asahi-dev
<sven> yeah, the driver is called tipd for TI Power Delivery
<sven> the chip is called tps6598x or apple cd321x for the apple variant

<karpouzi> "tba" in the soc feature table means nobody is working on it, at least publicly / in a tracked way right

<karpouzi> anyone have hints on the branch name scheme? is that in the wiki?
<karpouzi> bits/xyz-feature?
<povik> you mean, for your branches?
<povik> yeah, bits/xyz-feature is what marcan uses
<karpouzi> yeah. i guess these are on the main repo, so they're picked by maintainers
<j`ey> karpouzi: just use whatever name you want for your branch, markan will deal with the bits/* stuff
<povik> ^^
<karpouzi> ty :^)
bluetail7 has joined #asahi-dev
<karpouzi> does anyone have a decent way of tracking branches *off* asahilinux/linux? github is tough, 45k branches off the torvalds/linux repo
<povik> what's the point though for tracking that?
bluetail7 has quit []
bluetail8 has joined #asahi-dev
<karpouzi> should i take it everything labeled 'wip' is being tracked as a branch off asahilinux/linux?
bluetail has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
bluetail8 is now known as bluetail
<karpouzi> e.g. if i want to contribute to bit xyz, do i go off what's already wip on that in the main repo or search around for other contributors' forks
V has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<povik> usually people's contributions don't depend on each other, and if they do, it's orchestrated here over IRC
VinDuv has joined #asahi-dev
<j`ey> best thing to do is to ask about the bit you want to contribute to, and then there may be another branch to base your changes on
<karpouzi> i see. i'm wondering in particular about thunderbolt, there are a couple wip branches i've taken a gander at
<j`ey> then you'll want to talk to sven, but I'm not sure if there is much that can be split off/worked in parallel there
<karpouzi> ok, ty. that does sound par for usb
<karpouzi> dp-altmode-WIP seems to be the branch... sven, are you by chance considering writing the driver in rust
<karpouzi> oh, there are some branches on sven's fork too!
leitao has joined #asahi-dev
<povik> :D
<povik> i am surprised how popular "are you considering writing X in rust" is getting as a question
<_jannau_> the newest branch would be atcphc-20221130
<karpouzi> well my m1 is coming later this week so maybe i will try some stuff :)
<povik> do people not want to write C anymore?!
<povik> maybe i am getting old...
<karpouzi> i do not want to write c ;-;
<karpouzi> ooh thanks _jannau_
<povik> karpouzi: i think here the interfacing overhead (additional work in making it interface with existing C code) would far surpass any advantages
<karpouzi> yes that is probably true ;u:
<chadmed_> it might be worth investigating at some point just as an exercise in curiosity
<chadmed_> also your name makes me hungry :P
<_jannau_> also rust as in current upstream linux is not yet useable for us
<karpouzi> grill me with feta >:)
<psykose> tasty childhood memories
<karpouzi> oh no, really? i will have to read more on the infra of the asahi gpu branches
<marcan> FYI: there is a new asahi-diagnose script (pushed to asahi & asahi-dev repos already) to collect logs/info for bug reports
<karpouzi> you mean asahi-scripts repo?
<marcan> that's not a repo, that's a package
<_jannau_> it's available as update in the asahi/asahi-dev package repos
<karpouzi> oh i see ty
<_jannau_> if you use the asahi reference distro
<_jannau_> marcan: any objections to include drm information from /sys/kernel/debug when run as root?
<marcan> _jannau_: sure, go for it
<karpouzi> night :)

<sven> it makes no sense to write atcphy in rust
<sven> it’s a bunch of MMIO pokes, rust doesn’t give you any particular advantage there
<sven> and thunderbolt itself already is a subsystem that needs to be adapted, no reason for rust there either

<Dcow> I saw mention "spi-hid-apple-of spi0.0: Read package crc mismatch" yesterday. I'd like to add some more input here. I am able to reproduce this only with touchpad. If you continuesly generate touch-move-remove figner evens eventually some of movement wont be processed (mouse pointer not moved) and on the NEXT touch crc issue come up to the dmesg. Looks like it queue two events and then check crc of whole buffer or something like that
roxfan has joined #asahi-dev

<jannau> make dtbs_check complains about local-mac-address for the wifi node. I don't think it complained about that before but I'm not sure what could have changed
<jannau> I would have expected it in dt-schema since it's listed in the devicetree specification
<jannau> in any case it's missing in brcm,bcm4329-fmac.yaml
<robher> jannau: Yeah, I think we need to split some common things out of ethernet-controller.yaml for wifi.
