cphealy: basically! As in Mesa, ES 1.x is *mostly* implemented as a layer on top of ES 2.x, if ES 1.x features don't work that likely means that there is a problem with some shaders in ES 2.x too. But there are some exceptions to this, features that have no equivalent in ES 2.x, or have no emulation in Mesa because they're assumped to be direcly supported. glClipPlane is an example of the latter,

I'm not sure about the state now but lack of support for this caused some problems with mirrors in Quake3.
