daniels: what does assigning only 2 MRs at a time do? I'm a bit confused, and not sure if/when it's safe to start assigning things to marge again
<daniels>
eric_engestrom: whilst the shared runners were getting obliterated by various things, and the a618 by someone doing vk-full, I just stepped it through one at a time
<daniels>
I only assigned the second one when I was super confident that the current one was going to succeed in time
<eric_engestrom>
ack
<eric_engestrom>
and giving it an extra round otherwise
<eric_engestrom>
we really need to implement this job priority queue system that I've PoC'ed almost a year ago 🙃
<eric_engestrom>
(to run marge jobs before fork/user jobs)

ooc, how does that work?

<daniels>
eric_engestrom: oh btw, I forgot to hit submit, but just to check, your two MRs were for nightly-only jobs, right? if so it would be good to combine them into one

<eric_engestrom>
daniels: the radv and the nvk MRs? yeah, they only affect nightly pipelines
<daniels>
oh, I guess expectations won't trigger any jobs tho
<eric_engestrom>
and yeah I could combine them, or just merge them later (read: tomorrow or the day after) since nobody will care that it's fixed tonight
<daniels>
thanks <3
<daniels>
at least the queues seem to have calmed down a lot
<daniels>
from 2h wait times earlier this morning to ... much much less this afternoon
<eric_engestrom>
yeah, I went to great lengths to make these kind of changes not run all the jobs for that driver, so expectations changes for nightly jobs trigger no test
<daniels>
oh nice, just merge 'em in then
<eric_engestrom>
ack
<eric_engestrom>
they do still trigger all the build jobs though
<daniels>
mmm, at least those are fine now :)
* eric_engestrom
really wishes gitlab implemented the "only" thing in changes so that "if only the expectations files are changed and no test job is triggered, skip the builds"
<eric_engestrom>
I was also thinking again the other day that converting to a dynamic pipeline might be nice, to have full control over what jobs exist when, instead of being limited by gitlab's features
<eric_engestrom>
like the compare_to being broken for projects that use forks, or changes having too many limitations
<eric_engestrom>
but it would be a big effort to convert the whole ci config
<bentiss>
eric_engestrom: you could start by splitting the ci config in several per-device pipelines, and then trigger them based on your choices
<eric_engestrom>
but if we did that, it would then be trivial to say "only run the build jobs used by test jobs" for instance
<eric_engestrom>
would make the shared runners' use much lower
<eric_engestrom>
bentiss: what do you mean?
<eric_engestrom>
oh, convert eg. nvk to use a dynamic pipeline, and then later convert radv, etc. ?
<bentiss>
eric_engestrom: yeah
<eric_engestrom>
could do, yeah
<eric_engestrom>
I might do that then
<eric_engestrom>
thanks :)
<bentiss>
well, the idea came from you :)
<eric_engestrom>
(but not now or in the near future ^^)
<bentiss>
fair enough
<bentiss>
(and this is not a request to be involved in the MR, I watch from far away the mesa CI)
<eric_engestrom>
haha

daniels: there's been an a660 hdk on LAVA refusing to start jobs since the maintenance but it seems to be working now so I guess it's been sorted out
<valentine>
and sorry about hogging CI and starting a full run on a weekday. I checked that there were no Turnip MRs in flight when I started it but I forgot it was a shared runner
<daniels>
valentine: yeah, that’s now been fixed
<daniels>
no problem for waiting to do more testing, but yeah, if you could please only do it in European morning that would be good please :)
<daniels>
normally that’s the best time; today was just a confluence of weird terrible circumstances
