<stintel> so I installed Gentoo on my MacBook Air 15" today, and brcmfmac seems to work reasonably. color me surprised!
<dwfreed> at least you have a broadcom chipset that works with brcm
<dwfreed> I have to use wl
<stintel> auch
<dwfreed> I have the 4360, which is like the only AC chipset not supported by brcm
<stintel> I'm also seriously impressed by the performance, it's in many things faster than my 40c/80t workstation (which does have an old and low clock CPU but still)
<stintel> only huge codebases that benefit from the many cores build faster on the workstation still
<dwfreed> clock speed is still important
<PaulFertser> stintel: probably that's because Marcan spent quite sime time improving it, REing and porting missing features from macOS.
<stintel> and swapping fn with ctrl, option with command, I can swap between my workstation and the macbook without it messing up my muscle memory
<stintel> it took me some time to figure out how to install, but damn I'm pleased
<stintel> the model is not supported yet, asahi installer only supports installing UEFI environment, had to figure out things from there
<stintel> while you can "just" boot an installer from a USB drive from the u-boot, none of the installers support the hardware yet, so I had to roll my own installer basically
<stintel> also >8h battery life in plasma with display brightness on max, now figuring out how to enable brightness control
<stintel> in any case, ready to travel this weekend, with a usable laptop \o/
<dwfreed> nice
<dwfreed> though I question why one would intentionally buy a macbook these days when the goal is to run linux :P
<PaulFertser> And if you buy new the money go directly to evil apple :/
dangole has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<PaulFertser> dwfreed: but it's really the best hardware on the market it seems, with support from top hackers.
<dwfreed> best significantly overpriced hardware, sure
<stintel> dwfreed: everything portable enough these days comes with soldered on junk is one reason (no way in hell I'm buying something with QCA wifi on board)
<PaulFertser> Thinkpad x13s is about the same. And x86 laptops of comparable performance (and much less runtime) are costly too.
<stintel> and there aren't really any arm based alternatives with this performances
<dwfreed> I mean, all my routers are qca, I have no issues :P
<dwfreed> though the mt1300 needed to run snapshot pre 22.03
<stintel> if lenovo would have released the z13 with mtk wifi like they announced, that would have been the one
<stintel> but it comes with qca, soldered on
<PaulFertser> (alternatives) Pinebook Pro is really a joke, like a bunch of amateurs quickly designed something around an SBC, added a battery in the most stupid way possible and are selling the same alpha-state hardware for 4+ years without even thinking of fixing issues properly.
<PaulFertser> And it's not really an alternative performance-wise anyway.
<stintel> I've had terrible experience with different qca chips, both AP and client, most likely firmware issues, only qca and very few people can fix those, and everybody is on to wifi 6 or 7 by now, so these issues will probably never get fixed
<dwfreed> oh wait, nevermind, the mt1300 is actually mtk
<dwfreed> stintel: my nbg6817 works great
<stintel> the qca ac wave 1 APs I had been using started crapping themselves 10 times per minute once I connected my Facebook work equipment to them (galaxy s9 and macbook pro intel)
<stintel> rendered the 5GHz network unusable
<dwfreed> 6817 is wave 2, iirc
<stintel> that was it for me really, since then I've replaced all my APs with mtk, stopped buying snapdragon phones, or laptops with qca
<stintel> and my current phone is mtk dimensity 9200 based, I am LOVING that phone
<stintel> probably also because they don't cripple AOSP like every other vendor does
<stintel> it actually supports DPP with QR, nothing else I've tried seems to do so
<stintel> note that this is NOT sharing network credentials via QR, which most phones do support
<Habbie> what is it?
Spr0cket has joined #openwrt-devel
<stintel> scan a qr on an iot device with phone camera, devices establish secure link, then phone shares wifi credentials with iot device over secure link, iot device saves credentials and connects
<stintel> it's a secure alternative for WPS basically :)
<Habbie> ah, so the device gets the credentials, but the credentials are never on semi-public display?
<stintel> indeed
<Habbie> then i get it, thanks :)
<Habbie> and the QR can remain static
<Habbie> because the phone does some of the handshaking
<dwfreed> stintel: looks like my pixel 6 pro supports that?
<stintel> dwfreed: quite possibly yes, as it would run a non-crippled AOSP?
<stintel> AOSP supports DPP since version 11 or so
<stintel> sorry, 10
<stintel> so pixel devices, or things running lineageos should support it, granted the wifi firmware doesn't block the frames
<stintel> which both oneplus one and oneplus 2 seem to do at least
<stintel> ahem, qca
goliath has joined #openwrt-devel
<dwfreed> not sure what chipset is in the 6 for wifi
<stintel> 01:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Inc. and subsidiaries Device 4433 (rev 07)
<stintel> sorry, misunderstood you, you were talking about the pixel
<dwfreed> yeah
<dwfreed> it's probably hidden somewhere in the 10,000 fcc exhibits
