<hanetzer> ello.
<hanetzer> quick question. a lot of arm peripherals have some regs you can query to ID it. somethin like that exist for the mali gpus?
<macc24> yeah

<hanetzer> eyo
<hanetzer> yeh, I found it in the kmod source.
<hanetzer> pretty sure I've asked it before, but panfrost/mali gpus, they work in the normal system ram, unlike say my amdgpu which has ram on the card?
<macc24> yea
<HdkR> Until ARM decides to make a Mali dGPU anyway :P
<macc24> that would be terrible imo
<macc24> would make open source firmware much harder
<robclark> I'm not sure that tiler makes as much sense when you have fast vram and a big power budget.. but don't see how that would change firmware situation one way or another
<macc24> iirc amd gcn gpus are tilers
<macc24> robclark: dedicated gpu has its own ram and it needs to be trained
<macc24> by a firmware
<macc24> that's hard to write
<robclark> and are not tilers.. they might have tiled rasterisation (I think recent nv does), but that is a different thing
<macc24> hmm ok
<robclark> and sure, maybe they would want a separate pwr mgmt coproc, like pretty much everyone else does

<robmur01> also since it's not 1996 such a thing would need a display engine, physical interfaces, audio controller, etc. - very much not what Arm does
<alyssa> robmur01: mali-dp, obviously
<robmur01> nah, those are only for exotic testchips that Arm *does* occasionally make
<anarsoul> alyssa: has anyone seen it in the wild?
<robmur01> anarsoul: Xiaomi Surge and NXP LS1028 are the ones I know of
<hanetzer> blerg... y u no work reboot :P
<robclark> robmur01: tbf there are compute-only gpu's that have no display connections (although also another use case that doesn't particularly benefit from being a tiler)
<robclark> and kinda a niche market
<alyssa> i hear mesa might get one of those~
<macc24> robmur01: we could do without it
<macc24> just copy frames over to integrated graphics xD
<robmur01> robclark: indeed, but I figure the datacentre accelerator market is so far away from relevance to Mali that it may as well be the free-range organic beef market ;)
<macc24> only 1gbyte per second needed for 1080p60
* hanetzer slaps a rockchip soc with pci onto a pci card and makes it a gpu, the firmware is linux
<hanetzer> iirc there are aspeed gpus like that.
<HdkR> aspeed AST2600 and Mali, an ideal pairing
<hanetzer> I'm really glad the popping joints->arthritis thing is apparently not true, it hurts too good :)

<alyssa> blink
<macc24> hanetzer: ... what?
davidlt has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<hanetzer> I'm fairly compulsive with joint popping (knuckle cracking/etc). growing up I was told it would give me arthritis (is that even how you spell it?)
<hanetzer> even pop joints most folks don't. ever deliberately pop your elbow?
<macc24> i can pop my spine
<macc24> anyway i think i left the oven on at home, the weirdness levels are getting too high even for me
<hanetzer> yee. that's a good one, kind of like uh.... hrm. there's a sound that's similar.

<MoeIcenowy> for some embedded GPU with dedicated VRAM, I remembered one (but the GPU used is not Mali but Vivante)
<MoeIcenowy> Loongson 7A1000 companion chip (the main DRAM is directly connected to CPU
<macc24> loongson... that's a name i haven't heard in a long time
<MoeIcenowy> ah I am Chinese ;-) (but I have no so new Loongson -- I have one with ancient AMD north bridge (RS780E)
<macc24> i've got a lemote 8101b
derzahl has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<MoeIcenowy> in fact 7A1000 mimics the behavior of RS780E+SB700 (because it's designed to workaround the discontinuation of this AMD combo
derzahl has joined #panfrost
<MoeIcenowy> at the era of RS780E, AMD had moved system memory controller to CPU, and thus the "north bridge" has dedicated VRAM
