<HaikuUser> but, it does not asjk me for any details
<nosycat> It has an account setting dialog.
<HaikuUser> I will look again
<nosycat> You can also just use the /nick command for now.
<HaikuUser> in network, preferences..there is nothing wrt account setup
<HaikuUser> usually, onlinux, i use liberachat
<nosycat> I just closed my netbook so can't check right now.
<nosycat> But I configured Vision a while ago. It has all the usual options.
<nosycat> Look under servers.

<PetePEET> My dudes... It's been a while since I've done this so I've forgotten how to do it smoothly
mcsuper5 has joined #haiku
<PetePEET> How do I move my stuff from my old install to a new one? The reason I ask is my old drive is dying and will not even boot. It still shows up however in linux. I'm about to see if it's readable in Haiku
<PetePEET> if it is, I will reinstall on a new usb device. Once that's done, How do I move my stuff? Is it just the home folder? That can't be right because I have a lot of stuff installed...
<PetePEET> Please to be helping. Thank you kindly sirs
<augiedoggie> if the disk is still readable then you can just run the Installer app and it will copy data & settings
<augiedoggie> using the old disk as the source drive
<PetePEET> So boot the installer, and use old drive as source?
<augiedoggie> yes
<PetePEET> I really appreciate it. Thanks man
<augiedoggie> good luck

<pete> is there any way to just fix the bootloader on an install?
<augiedoggie> depends on what's wrong with the bootloader
<pete> Possible to just reinstall the bootloader?
<augiedoggie> if you need a new totally new bootsector, there is a "Tools" menu in the installer that has one, once the target disk has been set
<pete> IPray that it doesn't wipe my installation :(
amayas[m] has joined #haiku
<pete> I tried reinstalling but it won't allow me to choose my old drive as the source
<pete> it's greyed out as an option
<pete> and I have the WEIRDEST probem from the get go:
<pete> my installed system doesn't boot, but If I plug in the installer AND my old drive, it boots into my old drive.
DKnoto_W has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<pete> And then it gets even weirder....

<pete> The installer is just an iso burned to a usb drive right? Well, once I boot both drives together as stated above, then, booting ONLY the installer takes me to a haiku destop (a fresh one) WITHOUT the installer.
<pete> How can the iso usb even be modified???
DKnoto_W2 has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<pete> I have to dd the usb with the haiku iso again just to get back to the installer
<pete> I wish you guys could see it. It's crazy
<augiedoggie> the installer is just an app, you can run it from the Applications menu
<augiedoggie> and the usb images aren't pure iso, they're anyboot disk images
<pete> Hm.. I wonder why it fails to load after the first time I boot the drive
<pete> AH....
<pete> You have restored my sanity
<pete> I thought some crazy gremlin was in my computer
<pete> but I wonder why I cannot choose my old install as the source disk?
<pete> I'll just try reinstalling the boot loader. If it wipres out my system then oh well I guess
<augiedoggie> not sure about that, maybe the partition type got messed up
<pete> I worked so hard to get that dark theme installed :( I have no idea how I got it to work :(
<pete> Wait.. what If I just installed to a fresh disk, then rsynced everything from the old drive to the new one?
<pete> Is there anything like fstab in linux that I need to keep?
<pete> Or... perhaps I can boot the two disks, causing my old one to boot, then run the installer from my old disk
<pete> Here we go. Goodbye antix linux on this machine
<pete> I actually love the install technology in Haiku. It's so sensible. I do something similar in Linux: instead of respinning install isos, I build a system, sanitize it and clone it to redeploy on as many systems as I want
<pete> I have my image down to 2.9GB.
<pete> That's about the size of the installer iso
<Begasus> closing down

<pete> Good LORD... GPT is as annoying as uefi or Windows update
<pete> had to use gdisk to wipe the first AND last sectors so I could reinitilaize a disk
<pete> Got my install working though. Thanks again augiedoggie
DKnoto has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<pete> moving to a fresh usb drive as we speak
<nephele> what's that to do with GPT? it sounds like a bug in whatever tool you were using
<nephele> backup sector is a feature not a bug ;)
<pete> nephele: nope.
<pete> doesn't matter what tool you use, if you don't zap both signatures, it persists and causes problems
<pete> not ith all installers/partition editors, but with a lot (like Haiku)
<nephele> What tool *did* you use?
<pete> Haiku's partition editor and installer for one.
<nephele> DiskFormat? and that did not properly delete both gpt tables?
<pete> Also gparted and gnome-disks
<nephele> Well, file a bug. the tool is broken then :)
<nephele> that's not gpt beeing bad but DriveFormat misbehaving
<pete> I see what you're saying but gpt is annoying as hell
<pete> I've had to use gdisk to wipe both signatures in the past for other OS installs
<pete> also, a lot of disks come formatted with zfs (new disks that were tested and sold as open box for example, with almost no hours of service in the logs)
<pete> and you cannot use them until you kill both signatures. Windows won't recognize them, Linux won't recognize them
<nephele> what do you mean they come with zfs? someone added them to a pool? zfs does not technically require partitions but it will use them
DKnoto_W2 has joined #haiku
<nephele> linux absolutely can recognize zfs
<pete> They were formated with zfs
<pete> I believe the people testing them add thm to pools, yes. That probabyl makes their job faster and easier
<pete> ironically, I used a lot of those disks for zpools in the end

<nephele> Well, my personal experience has been that if all operating systems fail with their file system support... FreeBSD will still do it easily
forghani[m] has joined #haiku
<nephele> barring the control chip beeing literally broken of course :)
<pete> nephele: indeed
<nephele> on a fun side note i do have a usb drive that became RO and can now only install freebsd
<pete> nephele: the only other tool I know of that absolutely destroys a desk layout and makes it new again is a freebsd tool. What's it called?

<nephele> don't know on the top of my head. I assume you don't mean cp /dev/zero though :)
<nephele> you mean freebsd's own commandline disk formatting util?
<pete> maybe im thinking of gpart destroy
<nephele> Yes, seems likely
zeldakatze[m] has joined #haiku
<nephele> gpart is one of those incredibly good tools

<nephele> put it in your ESP, feel happy if you need it xD
<pete> I remember mumbling curse words in my head like, "oh you mother!@#!#$ I'mbouta boot BSD right now and wipe the !@#$% outta you !@$@#%"
<nephele> anyway, if you can recreate the specific bug (Haiku DriveSetup not wiping correctly) would be nice to file it#
<pete> I'll think about it
<pete> I know it would be helpful
<pete> I wish Haiku worked on my fujitsu. Bad screen (lines and distortion)
<nephele> wrong timing?
<pete> Seems something like that
<nephele> I had that on one screen and it went away when i increased the refresh rate to 75hz
Maston[m] has joined #haiku
<pete> Well doggone... I didn't think refresh rate would solve it. Lemme give it a go
<pete> Booting back in
<nephele> I think in my case it may be related to displayport adaptive sync (or the lack of it in haiku)
