<chadmed> the gentoo overlay now has a mesa ebuild that adds video_cards_asahi and builds the gallium driver if that use flag is set
<chadmed> i want to push a news item to the overlay but i cant seem to get portage to detect the news item
<espo> :) sweet
<_jannau_> someone is jumping the gun (or well prepared)
<chadmed> well it's there in the codebase, might as well have it ready to go. if people add VIDEO_CARDS="asahi" to their make.conf then all they will need to do to get 3d accel is upgrade their kernel
<chadmed> and it will Just Work
<_jannau_> I think it will need either mesa bumps, patches or a -9999 ebuild to work in the beginning
<chadmed> im pretty sure alyssa has been pushing everything to the CI bot as she goes, ill take another look at the tree later and see whats going on
<chadmed> i know lina also fixed some bugs
<_jannau_> yes. the kmsro integration is not yet working which needs to be fixed in mesa
<espo> thought of buying a second hand mac mini, but hey the prices are nearly the same buying it new :/

<chadmed> yeah well it's not really of consequence at this stage anyway. and of course we can just change the ebuild however we want if need be but id imagine whatever fixes are necessary will have been made long before the kernel driver is ready for public consumption
<chadmed> it's gated behind ~arm64, doesnt break sw rendering and doesnt break versioning with the gentoo repo so we should be fine

<mps> friend wants install alpine on mini but I have no access to mini to check all things. is there some docs what is needed? from irc log I think usb-c adapter for keyboard and usb flash/disk also must be connected over usb-c
<jannau> the usb-a ports work in linux. everything u-boot/bootloader accessible needs to be on the usb-c ports
<mps> jannau: yes, I remember to read they work when kernel is booted
<mps> so, usb boot media must be also on usb-c, external hub should work I guess
