<leif> there is absolutely no problem with grub and 16k btrfs. My project has been using grub and a btrfs subvolume for ages: https://github.com/leifliddy/asahi-fedora-builder
<leif> you can easily convert an ext4 partition --> btrrfs https://github.com/AsahiLinux/asahi-installer/issues/71#issuecomment-1088853130

<Glanzmann> jannau, j`ey, mps: Do you have the link to the xorg anti tiering patch, I would like to try it.
<Glanzmann> jannau: Is the display brightness to come back to the previous value, when the display was off for approx. 8 hours? If that is the case it does not work for me.
<j`ey> Glanzmann: this one I think you mean https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/xorg/xserver/-/merge_requests/1006 ?
<Glanzmann> j`ey: YEs, thank you.
<mps> Glanzmann: yes, I used this what j`ey posted above
<axboe> Glanzmann: if you build a package with it, I'll give it a spin too
<mps> for me it doesn't work
<mps> lets hope Glanzmann will have more luck
<axboe> I don't seem to have any issues with tearing, at least nothing that I've noticed
<mps> axboe: also I don't notice tearing
<mps> everything works fine, really
benzmac16v has joined #asahi-alt
<axboe> ditto
<axboe> even my suspend/resume seems reliable now
<mps> though I use mtrack driver instead of libinput
<axboe> excessive chromium cpu usage for eg youtube, however
<axboe> but that's really a minor thing
<axboe> mps: maybe I should try that, trackpad is a bit annoying
<Glanzmann> axboe: Try to play this video with vlc: https://tg.st/u/man_over_bord_small.mp4 (400 MB)
<Glanzmann> axboe: Suspend/resume works for me, too.
<axboe> Glanzmann: will try
<Glanzmann> mps: Do you have notes ont he mtrack driver, what benefits does it give?
<Glanzmann> I also only notice tearing when playing fast moving videos.
thatdevsherry has joined #asahi-alt
<axboe> Glanzmann: hmm don't see any tearing playing that
<axboe> but it does use 250% cpu :/
<Glanzmann> axboe: For me it even burns more cpu. Whan I can see the tearing very clearly.
<mps> Glanzmann: nothing special, just read guides on https://github.com/p2rkw/xf86-input-mtrack and tweaked to my needs
<Glanzmann> s/Whan/But/
<Glanzmann> mps: I see.
benzmac16v has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<Glanzmann> With the anti tearing patch, I don't see tearing anymore when I'm in full screen. But when vlc is not in full screen I still see tearing. But less than previously. Now I have to revert back and see if I have any tearing when running vlc in fullscreen without the patch.
<Glanzmann> I just did /tmp; apt-get build-dep xserver-xorg-core; apt-get source xserver-xorg-core; applied the patch without the api change because than the debian build scripts complain; fakeroot debian/rules binary
Dementor has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
Dementor has joined #asahi-alt
<axboe> Glanzmann: let us know how it works
<Glanzmann> The problem is with vlc in fullscreen I also don't see tearing without the patch.
<Glanzmann> If someone tried the above xorg package and want the old one back: sudo apt-get install --reinstall xserver-xorg-core
<Glanzmann> Okay, so with the patches xserver and this setting, I don't see any tearing any more when playing in an almost fullscreen vlc windows. With the original one and the same config I can see tearing. Always when the camera passes over the mainsail.
benzmac16v has joined #asahi-alt
<Glanzmann> I can also confirm the findings from above on macbook air m1.
<Glanzmann> Now I need to install asahi Linux and find out if xfreerdp is also slow on asahi linux and file a bug report.
<Glanzmann> axboe: With your kernel config I managed to crash my system by playing the man over bord video with mpv. Lets see if I can reproduce it.
<Glanzmann> And can't reproduce it anymore.
benzmac16v has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<axboe> Glanzmann: huh, that's odd. did you capture the dmesg?
<Glanzmann> axboe: Let me check.
benzmac16v has joined #asahi-alt
<Glanzmann> Nothing of value: https://pbot.rmdir.de/a7zb5a_eaGXj5nXD1C0l3w
<Glanzmann> axboe: Forget about it. It is the anti tearing patch.
<Glanzmann> So with the anti tearing patch, if I play a video in vlc full screen and than start an xterm using a hot key, the screen freezes.

<ahdeb[m]> Glanzmann: maybe you already noticed, but mesa unfortunately have build-deps on packages which are not yet multi-arch aware... so easy cross-building with dpkg-buildpackage will not work. (Also I forgot to mention needed steps like: dpkg --add-architecture arm64 ; apt-get -y update ; apt-get -a arm64 build-dep . <--- and this last step is what will fail because of https://bugs.debian.org/769380 and similar issues in llvm ).

<axboe> Glanzmann: tried the tear free xserver, and I see the same as you if I enable tear free. you can still switch to a console and kill Xorg, it's just that being hung, not the machine
<axboe> fwiw, I see no difference in eg scroll feel or videos with that package and tear free turned on

<cy8aer> Glanzmann: I found an error message when my keyboard problem at initrd occurs; spi_hid_apple failed, It is the first output when switching to appledrm
<Glanzmann> cy8aer: I see. I never had keyboard problems. But all configs expect mps and axboes does not boot my mini. I reach userland but than get deferred probing messages and it just hangs: https://tg.st/u/IMG_20221209_140716907.jpg
benzmac16v has joined #asahi-alt
<cy8aer> Glanzmann: yes, hangings occur sometimes too but without output at that point, But this is very rare.
<Glanzmann> jannau: The brightness keys do not send keyevents for me, do you know how to fix that? https://pbot.rmdir.de/-XCjFuD3Cw6cFhDxMluLUw
<Glanzmann> cy8aer: But you saw the email from the other user I was CCing you, too. They have the same setup as you and the same problem.
<Glanzmann> jannau: This is the 'xev' output from my m1 air. When I press fn + f1 it sends the F1 keyevent.
<cy8aer> Glanzmann can I send my info with the spi_hid_apple to someone as a hint?
benzmac16v has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<j`ey> cy8aer: that's jannau's driver too
<cy8aer> ah and jannau is in this channel too. Ok.
Dementor has joined #asahi-alt
<Glanzmann> cy8aer: I think m a r c a n also said the spi driver needs a debug session, IIRC.
<cy8aer> hm, he may look at that channel too, just to have the info for all who may need it,
<mps> Glanzmann: for me fn+F1 works fine
<mps> state 0x0, keycode 232 (keysym 0x1008ff03, XF86MonBrightnessDown), same_screen YES
benzmac16v has joined #asahi-alt
<cy8aer> Glanzmann: and I saw your mail of course. Thank you
<Glanzmann> mps: Funny think is fn+f1 gives me f1, but if I press any other modifier, control/option/command I get xf86monbrightnessup/down
Glanzmann has quit [Quit: n8]
benzmac16v has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<jannau> Glanzmann: did you modify any hid-apple module parameters? the keys should by default report KEY_BRIGHTNESSDOWN/KEY_BRIGHTNESSUP and with 'fn' F1/F2. can you test with evtest

<Glanzmann> I have the following modifications: https://pbot.rmdir.de/pLox2PdUpFKsL9DrQAqDFg
<Glanzmann> I have an macbook air with us keyboard.
<Glanzmann> jannau: Evtest looks better: https://pbot.rmdir.de/g6t19hNvkbDv6URSzXqelQ
jamespmo_ has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<Glanzmann> jannau: xev does not show me the keyevent. But it is there. Because when I configure fvwm2 to react on it, it works.
<Glanzmann> Strange.
