winter: released a new update and mpv -vo=gpu works fine with it. in fact it is the default
<tpw_rules>
not sure if it didn't work fine with the old update

i also tested glmark2 and got very low numbers, but they are still 80% faster than cpu. i imagine there is a non-implemented path falling back to software, or a high fixed overhead in some case
<zzywysm>
tpw_rules: you did a release faster than i could submit another pull request :D

tpw_rules: I'll test `-vo=gpu` on the latest Mesa commit, cheers. Still need to look into that weird Sway/DPI thing, though.
<winter>
Also, wrt glmark: interesting.
<winter>
jannau said that very low numbers are unexpected, hm.
<tpw_rules>
i am using xfce as my desktop manager. could possibly be a bad interaction with that. also bear in mind i am on m1 max, i seem to recall there are some differences
<jannau>
do you see the those low scores under X11? I'm only testing with drm/(x)wayland. can you try an off-screen benchmark? I get with `glmark2-es2-wayland -s 1920x1080 --off-screen` a score off 2171 on 24 GPU core M1 Max

_jannau_: with glmark2-es2 -s 1920x1080 --off-screen i get a score of 2289 on 32 gpu core m1 max. i assume the extra 8 cores are pretty idle given the simplicity of the scenes. but that is much better than the 759 with the defaults.

wayland was being cranky on my system
<tpw_rules>
winter: incidentally i was trying to get sway to do something useful (suspect i need to read the manual and create a config) and i noticed it went into hidpi mode the first time i started it but not the subsequent times

tpw_rules: can you try with weston for testing or glmark2-es2-drm from a tty
<tpw_rules>
i could not get glmark2-es2-drm to go from a VT, it complained about failing to initialize something. do i have to do it remotely over ssh? i made sure to stop my display server first. i can grab the exact message but it felt like user error
<tpw_rules>
i'm not sure intuitively what the prerequisites are for something to work properly with DRM. maybe this explains why wayland wouldn't work properly either

<jannau>
tpw_rules: it should work but is not useful since it is vsynced
<tpw_rules>
then i'm not sure what the difference is between a tty or a VT. i mean like doing ctrl+alt+f2

Regarding "slow" glmark, comparing the very first test of "glmark2" (800x600 windowing) of my i3-7100U and 8 Core M2 MBA it is a 3050 vs 1500 win for the Intel GPU. both running debian testing latest. Other tests were similar iirc. So, yes, could be faster but stable and fast enough for a lot of tasks already.
<ashi>
both wayland gnome, tried to make this as "fair" as possible
