<paps__>
Hello all. I've been using Debian with great success thanks to Thomas Glanzmann's repo and packages (https://git.zerfleddert.de/cgi-bin/gitweb.cgi/m1-debian/), I installed it 2 months ago. Now I see Debian's wiki mentions Thomas Renard's fork (https://git.g3la.de/repos/m1-debian), and I would like to use it to get the speakers and HDMI port working. If I just change the APT sources to Renard's fork, will I wreck my system?
<paps__>
Let me know if I'm not asking in the right place 😬

paps__: The Glanzmann's packages are Debian stable, my packages are Debian testing. As I knew Thomas Glanzmann wanted to update his kernel to have sound and (with firmware 13.5) HDMI too. To use my packages you need to upgrade to debian testing. But I do not know if someone did this before (first update to testing, then swap to my repo and upgrade).
<cy8aer>
So yes: Wrecking the system is possible when doing it wrong.
<paps__>
Amazing thanks for the quick reply. I'm already on unstable, that's how I use Debian :) So I will go ahead and switch to your packages hehe. Thanks a lot
<cy8aer>
Then it should work.
<cy8aer>
But still use my testing repo. I use unstable for development which can cause problems.
<paps__>
Very clear, thanks. I will report back with what I find
<cy8aer>
Thank you that would be helpful

<cy8aer>
and be warned: HDMI needs an update to the 13.5 stub. Try the update first. And when you are happy with the actual sound and mesa stuff - then you need to update the stub to 13.5
<cy8aer>
(but you may be on 13.5 if you installed it 2 month ago...)

cy8aer: When going to your m1n1 package, it fails with "gzip: /usr/lib/u-boot-asahi/u-boot-nodtb.bin: No such file or directory" and here I'm already lost :) (sorry...)
<cy8aer>
Just a moment: do you have installed u-boot-asahi 2024.01.23-6+cy8aer1?
* paps__
Ah, that does the trick :)
<cy8aer>
that is a transition because the upstream asahi-scripts swapped the path of u-boot-nodtb.bin. So u-boot-asahi did not install automatically?
<cy8aer>
I need to correct the dependencies in my kernel meta package...
<paps__>
Wow. Working audio, video acceleration (webrender in Firefox, no lag in Google maps etc), HDMI 4k 60fps. That is excellent, thank you so much
<paps__>
Also I think I had to install linux-image-6.6.0-asahi-00913-g4e615b7f7cae by hand, otherwise I would have stayed on 6.5. Or maybe it's related to the above. Not sure
<cy8aer>
paps__: Thanks for your information. With the new "linux-image-asahi" 6.6.0-15-4+cy8aer1 it now should install the right u-boot-asahi. Sorry for the inconveniance. linux-image-asahi is the root package which should get all the dependend packages.
<cy8aer>
Ah, you only did an apt upgrade? Better ist really install linux-image-asahi.
<cy8aer>
linux-image-6.6.0-asahi-00913-g4e615b7f7cae is a dependency for linux-image-asahi too.
<paps__>
Yeah my bad I only did apt upgrade, and I noticed it would not upgrade to 6.6, so I selected one of your linux images, but indeed I should have just installed linux-image-asahi
<paps__>
Anyway thanks for this. This is resulting in a great debian system that I will daily drive for work 👌

https://git.g3la.de/repos/m1-debian shows me a Dutch version of a `github` like page. Cannot find the history/git log button. Funny how changing a language makes it difficult to navigate :-)
<janrinze>
cy8aer: HDMI != AltDP, right?
<cy8aer>
Right. Only the HDMI port at the MacPros
<cy8aer>
janrinze: Try the Commits button
<cy8aer>
(you should see 69x Commits on the upper left hand side)
<cy8aer>
The system behind is foregejo, a gitea fork. It can handle repositories and works as an artifactory for e.g. debian Repos. Simply go and self hosted.
<cy8aer>
And you can run github actions. And I am able to start runners on the mac now. My next step is to build and deploy the debian packages by CI/CD

AltDP is technically just a pass-through switch of DVI over USB-C. nothing magical.
<j`ey>
are you offering to implement it? :P

<cy8aer>
janrinze: they are on it. But for the debian kernel packages this means: it is ready when they are ready. The developers make a very good work and the best way is to wait until they create a official patch. I will never compile pre-states. So ready when ready

janrinze: that's not what it is at all. dvi and displayport are electrically incompatible unless the controller supports dual mode
<chadmed>
hint: dcp doesnt support that because who tf is adapting displayport to dvi in 2024
