<nsklaus__>
chadmed: thanks for telling, it is good to know
<chadmed>
its been running pretty flawlessly since we figured out what the problem with dracut was
<nsklaus__>
dracut, wasn't it a tool to create boot image ?
<nsklaus__>
something to do with kernel and boot, it adds modules support ..something something.. i need to read about it
<chadmed>
yeah, problem was it silently failing to put the correct modules into the initramfs
<chadmed>
i fixed it by forcing it to do so and ensuring its gets emerged with zstd support enabled

it might be fun to test gentoo agai, last time i tried it was before the introduction of useflags
<nsklaus__>
thanks for the link

its fun to race these machines, theyre so fast
<chadmed>
in the amount of time it usually takes me to get one rootfs installed and booted i did it like 4 times on this 14"
<chadmed>
its just ridiculous
<JTL>
nsklaus__: wait, there was a time before portage had USE? :P
<j`ey>
chadmed: race them?
millenialhacker has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<chadmed>
against my server and 2017 macbook :P
<nsklaus__>
"race = use" them i think
<nsklaus__>
ah that way ok
<j`ey>
nsklaus__: a few people are using alpine, which is musl libc and openrc init
<nsklaus__>
devuan is nice.. i used to run artix, but devuan is nice too
<chadmed>
i had the 5600x in my server overclocked to 4.6ghz until a few days ago so its been kind of funny watching this laptop finish building stuff before my server
<j`ey>
my air is pretty competive for building kernel/qemu.. but way slower at c++
<j`ey>
(vs a dual xeon...)
<chadmed>
this is why i want to replace the server with a mac mini connected to a disk shelf of some description
<chadmed>
why should i pay for 100+W of idle power draw when i can pay for ~6W instead
<j`ey>
exactly!
<maz>
moving from the D05 to a Studio has made a visible dip in my power consumption. I fear the provider is about to go bust any minute! ;-)

<j`ey>
maz: so the studio is your main workstation now?
<maz>
j`ey: not quite. I still have an x86 box to run the FVP.
<maz>
j`ey: the notion of workstation is also a bit odd. I use the work laptop as a glorified X server, and use Xpra to handle sessions on both the Studio and the x86 box. not sure which of the 3 qualifies as a workstation... ;-)
<j`ey>
whichever does the most work for you :P

i set up waypipe to do something similar a while ago as a proof of concept that you can in fact (almost) 1:1 replace the MS enterprise ecosystem with an entirely free stack and it was fun to use for a while

chadmed: Ack. Ideally we'd just wire up gamma correction, DCP ought to support it.
<alyssa>
"Night Light broken on ARM devices" is admittedly a goofy title ... the bug is about Qualcomm, not every Arm device ever...
<alyssa>
as the KDE dev there replies, if you have gamma in hw you really want to use it, using CTM instead is a hack

marcan: i realize you're out right now, just giving a heads up I addressed most of the concerns you mentioned on my pull request for m1n1

feel free to check that out whenever (note it's mainly just slight changes to address the concerns in the PR so it's nothing earth shattering like raw binaries getting support for DWARF symbols lol)
<amarioguy>
(not like that'd be possible in any event)
