<madpro[m]>
👋 Hi, just here to ask for some help on how to get started with #_oftc_#asahi-dev:matrix.org as a contributor?
<madpro[m]>
Experience-wise, I have worked with Linux before, just playing with my local machine's kernel. So this would be first time doing something that could potentially break other people's machines 😅
<madpro[m]>
Is it better to just start with simple Issues and work my way up from there? Or do we have a Beginner's Manual?
<madpro[m]>
I know the Asahi dev team is pretty self-contained but I hope it shouldn't hurt to ask :)
<sven>
it doesn’t matter much since the t2 only comes with a single board type but I’d like to be sure we can’t just grab it from acpi without horrible hacks

<kettenis>
a hexdump isn't useful for the tools I normally use to look at acpi stuff

<sven>
I think you can use acpixtract on that to get back to binary. I can also ask someone with a t2 Mac to use another tool to generate the dump otherwise

<kettenis>
thanks, that works
<kettenis>
"module-instance", "formosa"
<kettenis>
that's for the wifi PCI device
<kettenis>
there is a _DSM method that returns that
<sven>
yeah, but does that also apply to the Bluetooth device?
<sven>
or, well, can i call (?) that method from the bluetooth device?
<kettenis>
I suspect not
<kettenis>
but wifi and bt are part of the same chip and therefore part of the same module
<sven>
yeah
<kettenis>
Device (AMFM)
<sven>
there's also only bluetooth firmware for "formosa"
<kettenis>
there's that too, which is interesting ince there is an amfm node in the ADTs for the arm64 machines
<kettenis>
Device (WLAN)
<kettenis>
which has a _DSM method that returns a module-instance property that is set to formosa as well
<kettenis>
I don't see anything that explicitly references the bluetooth function of the PCIe device
<kettenis>
it may be possible to find the acpi node that corresponds to the wifi function based on the PCIe bus and device
<kettenis>
that would allow you to call that _DSM methin
<kettenis>
s/methin/method/
<sven>
ok, that probably explains why there was no acpi companion for that bt device then
<kettenis>
yup
<sven>
might be easiest to just hardcode formosa. I kinda doubt we’ll see another apple x86 machine
