<chadmed> the part IDs in MIDR_EL1 didn't change between the Max and the Ultra did they?
<chadmed> are they still 0x028 and 0x029?
off^ has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<jannau> it remained identical. m1 ultra is 2 m1 max dies
<chadmed> yeah cool just checking
<chadmed> cant decide whether to call them "Icestorm (M1 Max/Ultra)" or just use "(M1 Max)"
<chadmed> im adding missing parts to lscpu
off^ has joined #asahi-dev
<chadmed> it probably makes more sense to go with just Max since the Ultra is 2x Max and the cores are identical parts but from a UX perspective that seems less than intuitive
<chadmed> especially when people go to view information about their system in neofetch or kde settings and it says 20 m1 max firestorm cores instead of m1 ultra

<kettenis> FWIW, for OpenBSD I just called them "Icestorm", "Icestorm Pro" and "Icestorm Max"

<sven> I kinda like icestorm pro/max
millenialhacker has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<chadmed> kettenis: that sounds like a good idea though again thinking of the UX side of things it almost suggests that they are materially different cores
<chadmed> i will mull this over when i have less ethanol in my bloodstream :P
<kettenis> it is somewhat strange that Apple used different IDs for what supposedly is the same core integrated on a different SoC
<chadmed> yeah i would assume theyd use REVIDR_EL1 instead of just incrementing MIDR_EL1 but this is apple we are talking about
<chadmed> everything has to be weird and backwards
<kettenis> well, maybe they did make some significant changes and they're just covering their asses in case there is any user-visible effect of those changes
<kettenis> in the end it is justa name ;)
<chadmed> yeah of course, im just concerned about ending up with an utterly enormous array for apple cores in lscpu-arm.c for util-linux, or worse yet running out of hex values for apple cores :P
<chadmed> that said i dont think apple is going to design (16C3)*3 cores any time soon
<kettenis> already seems to have a naming scheme for Apple cores
<chadmed> yeah but my gripe with it is that its gross and is a bad UX
<kettenis> he
<kettenis> heh
<chadmed> and given that it was only recently added, we can assume its still in flux and subject to change to improve the UX
<kettenis> running out of IDs is Apple's problem, not yours ;)
<sven> Apple will just somehow manage to make it ours ;)
<chadmed> yeah of course, but if we could stop them being called cryptic bs based on apple's internal codenames for the socs then that would be nice which is my goal for this
<chadmed> unfortunately both neofetch and kinfocenter get their data from /proc/cpuinfo which is less than useful on aarch64 since it only gives you hex values out of MIDR_EL1 instead of human readable strings
<kettenis> they'll probably switch to RISC-V before they run out just to save on licensing fees ;)
<sven> and then we get to port all of this to risc-v again! :D
<chadmed> that seems more like an intel thing at this stage given their partnership with sifive
