<citizen1[m]> dare i ask, when Asahi linux project is over does that mean we will reach a point where linux distros will be able to run on M1 just like they are running on x86 intel chips today? If this is true, what time frame do we expect for the project to complete?

<amw> MTecknology: Looked your pastes - if you run directly (linux.py) you expect the USB ports to go away
<amw> Unless you pick the corelium patches you can only get the USB external keyboard to work.
<amw> The corelium kernel that I used was https://github.com/amworsley/AsahiLinux/tree/asahi-keyboard - which is so full of hacks and stuff I do not plan to submit it or anything - but if you wanted to play...

<marcan> citizen1[m]: if you're asking about upstreaming/downstreaming timelines, that varies heavily depending on the distro
<marcan> rolling distros (Gentoo, Arch, etc) tend to be a few months behind upstream at most, usually less for these things
<marcan> things like Debian stable are much slower
<marcan> plus M1-specific things like whatever we do to deal with the Touch Bar will need to be packaged
<marcan> so it will be probably be a couple years until you can just grab a Ubuntu ISO unmodified and install it using our bootloader and get a decent experience out of the box
<marcan> but nothing stops people from maintaining alternate repos and install images with bleeding edge packages, for those distros
<marcan> the Asahi Linux project will never be over because (presumably) Apple will continue to release new computers and chips :)
<marcan> if you're asking when things will be "good enough" on M1, that depends on your definition of "good enough"
<marcan> Ethernet and NVMe and USB and a basic framebuffer work today, that's "good enough" for some people

<marcan> some people might not think it's "good enough" until Linux's HDR display support is on par with macOS, which is outside the scope of our project (we're primarily working on hardware support, not on core features - HDR support on Linux is in its infancy in general)

al3xtjames2 is now known as al3xtjames
<marcan> (but HDR support in Linux is moving forward, and we'll support it on M1 as the general subsystems/support moves forward)

<BlitzWorks> does the working ethernet above include the 10g version?
<kettenis_> the 10g ethernet is the aquantia 10g pcie chip
<kettenis_> I believe Linux already supports it
<BlitzWorks> ah nice, it does i ahve a couple of those cards already
<kettenis_> some tweaks may be necessary to make it have the right mac address
<kettenis_> i don't think anyone in our community tried it yet
<citizen1[m]> <marcan> "but nothing stops people from..." <- thank you, thats serious dedication to keep building linux for the M1. I would like to see a bigger team with to make this possible and in a shorter tome frame. That being said I fee completely embarrased that us as a society between all the mac, llinux , and corporates have not donated enough money to meet its financial needs

<MTecknology> re: good enough -- I personally want to be able to play Cities Skylines on Debian. Once it can handle that, it's more than capable of replacing my daily driver.

<rowang077[m]> Does that game have an arm version?
<MTecknology> I assumed so, since I'm currently playing it on M1
<simjnd[m]> You always have box86 and box64 to run x86 apps on ARM Linux
