What is the problem with Zink? If it goes well, it can obsolete all OpenGL DRI drivers for new hardware.
<HdkR>
There is no problem with Zink :)

User above said that Zink is a crazy idea.
<HdkR>
I believe that was mostly sarcasm, maybe with a nugget of truth from early people's reactions to the idea :P

<kisak>
future users: Your OpenGL driver must be at least as good as zink or you're wasting everybodies time.
<HdkR>
So as long as you don't have a Vulkan driver then you're in the clear?
<bnieuwenhuizen>
HdkR: or d3d12 driver :)
<HdkR>
:D
<x512>
DXVK exists.
<daniels>
X512: that was heavy sarcasm, I do believe that Zink is a great idea
<daniels>
and the D3D12 driver in tree is the reverse of dxvk; it implements Vulkan/GL/CL on top of D3D, not the other way around
<bnieuwenhuizen>
vulkan now too?
<bnieuwenhuizen>
is that lavapipe on top of the d3d12 backend?
<x512>
DXVK -> Vulkan -> Mesa D3D12 -> Windows. Will it work?
<kisak>
Vulkan -> d3d12 isn't mainline yet
<x512>
I managed to run RADV and Zink on Haiku. No Wine and DXVK yet.
<x512>
With Radeon Southern Islands GPU.
<x512>
Maybe it is not worth to spend time for OpenGL DRI drivers support.

Anybody knows how GPU can freeze whole PC?
<emersion>
many possible reasons
<emersion>
one of which is a Vulkan client messes up synchronization, for instance
<bnieuwenhuizen>
depends on whole PC
<emersion>
ssh should still work though
<bnieuwenhuizen>
normally worst that should happen is only a GPU hang
<bnieuwenhuizen>
if it extends beyond that ... kernel driver bug?
<x512>
I mean total PC freeze so even reset button don't work. What is happening at hardware level?
<emersion>
this shouldn't happen
<bnieuwenhuizen>
a bunch of power buttons are handled through ACPI + OS these days so if the OS is frozen/hung that can fail too
<bnieuwenhuizen>
but AFAIU long press of reset is typically without OS involvement
<x512>
Can PCIe GPU cause CPU execution to stop? Or maybe permanently lock PCI bus, cause interrupt storm etc..
<bnieuwenhuizen>
if you don't have an IOMMU it can overwrite all the RAM
<dottedmag>
PCIe buses are point-to-point and not really buses, aren't they?
<dottedmag>
BTW, what's the most expedient way to capture a kernel dmesg in this case on a regular PC? Serial port would be ideal, but they are kinda rare nowadays.
<x512>
It is my own driver, not Linux.
<x512>
I expect that something can go wrong, but total PC freeze on GPU reset phase looks strange.

<marex>
I ran into an odd problem with parallel (DPI) display recently, maybe someone of you saw it already before
<marex>
I have this DPI display, 800x480, ETM0700 , really bog standard thing
<marex>
it is connected to either iMX6Q (ipuv3) parallel output, or iMX6Q LDB (lvds out) via LVDS-to-DPI bridge, or STM32MP1 LTDC parallel out, all demonstrate the same issue
<marex>
which is, when weston suspends the screen and resumes it again, the image is "wobbly", as if its intensity was going back and forth a bi
<marex>
*bit
<marex>
after looking at the display with high-speed camera, I noticed the display behaves as if the update of the TFT matrix stopped mid-way at some horizontal line, and then continued at slightly different intensity from that point on
<marex>
that's what causes the "wobbliness" effect
<marex>
but the question is, why does this happen ?
<marex>
could it be the TFT matrix controller isn't reset, so it starts updating the matrix from some line somewhere in the middle instead of from line 0 ?
<marex>
the HS/VS/DE/CLK signals are all within spec per scope, so that's not an issue, both timing wise, signal Hi/LO voltage wise, that is all perfect
