<cuga> Hi, I'm new to this forum. I have some questions about installing a different version of Ubuntu than the "supported" ones that are listed

<cuga> I recently installed an arm64 port of Ubuntu which worked great under a Parallels VM. Used this: https://ubuntu.com/download/server/arm
<cuga> That allowed me to install Ubuntu headless (command line) and then install Mate Desktop instead of Ubuntu Desktop.
<cuga> Worked fine on the VM. Any reason I can't do this using the Ubuntu Asahi installer?
<cuga> Is it possible to install Ubuntu without the Desktop (headless) using the installer? Then I can update it after it's booted with a custom desktop
<tobhe[m]> that would also work
<tobhe[m]> you can use whatever desktop environment you like, but wayland works better than x11
<cuga> I beliueve Canonical has the Wayland running Mate
<tobhe[m]> i think i remember an announcement yes
<tobhe[m]> not technically from canonical but from the ubuntu mate community
<cuga> So would I use the installer to install just the base Ubuntu without the Desktop?
<cuga> then update after it's booted?
<tobhe[m]> the ubuntu asahi installer doesn't offer a minimal option
<cuga> that's what I'm asking about
<tobhe[m]> so you will have to remove gnome if you want or just not use it
<cuga> Yeah, I was hoping not to have to prune out all the gnome stuff
<tobhe[m]> you can easily change desktop environment in the login window
<tobhe[m]> it is a little tricky because it's easy ro remove too much
<cuga> Is it possible to use the installer but with an ISO I supply?
<tobhe[m]> but i expect there to be a ubuntu-mate meta package that should pull everything you need

<cuga> my IRC client got disconnected just now so I might not have read anything since
<cuga> Is it possible to use the installer but with an ISO I supply?
<cuga> sorry for asking again
<tobhe[m]> no, sadly not
<cuga> ok, too bad
<tobhe[m]> i am planning to add a more minimal iso and server at some point
<cuga> are the binaries in the asahi install the same as the ones now at: https://ubuntu.com/download/server/arm
<tobhe[m]> the image is a custom built one, many packages like mesa and kernel are replaced with our modified versions
<cuga> that branch now seems to work on Silicon hardware, at least in VM
<tobhe[m]> yeah, because the VM is not actually exposing anything looking like apple silicon
<tobhe[m]> bare metal is pretty different
<cuga> Got it
<cuga> OK, so the Asahi build does not get updates from Canonical and no gcc?
<cuga> thanks
<tobhe[m]> well almost all the packages you will use get regular ubuntu updates
<tobhe[m]> the stuff in the ppa is updated by us
<tobhe[m]> and usually more bleeding edge than normal ubuntu
<tobhe[m]> think of it as an overlay that replaces certain parts
<cuga> I see. That page has a list of packages that need to be custom for the hardware
<cuga> Would I be able to install other standard arm64 packages from Canonical?
<tobhe[m]> yes
<cuga> oh great
<cuga> Including all the compilers and stuff?
<tobhe[m]> the only thing canonical won't do is probably sell you a support contract
<tobhe[m]> but all packages are available
<cuga> Great
<cuga> So the only thing is, if I wanted a different Desktop than Gnome I would have to install it, then prune out Gnome and whatever else that came with Ubuntu-Desktop
<cuga> but it could be done
<tobhe[m]> yep
<cuga> Thank you - this has been very helpful
<tobhe[m]> np!
<cuga> oh, one more question
<cuga> I have a M1 Macbook Pro, but I heard it wonlt install on an M3 or higher. Is this correct?
<tobhe[m]> yes, m1 and m2 only for now
<cuga> good to know. Does it look hopeful for others in future?
