<karenw> Is there much use for XLib nowadays? Other than legacy support, new usages should probabally use XCB. (There's a problem if you need GLX, but don't use GLX, use EGL).
<alanc> many would argue new usage should be using libwayland-client, not libX11 or libxcb
<alanc> but there are still thousands of existing programs written to use XLib
<karenw> Well, yeah, if you don't need to target X systems. (e.g. KUbuntu LTS is still defaulting to X only)
<karenw> But that switchover hasn't happened yet, but is actively happening.
<alanc> admittedly, one of the reasons I still do a lot of maintenance work on X11 packages is because my day job is maitaining a Unix system that includes X11 and is not switching to Wayland

<karolherbst> probably the best idea is to run all X rootless if you must run it
<karolherbst> (maybe running as root support should be stripped out, but no idea how feasible it is if there is no code to remove)

<mripard> emersion: it was a bit vague, sorry. I'm especially wondering if we have a policy wrt to "competing" projects that could be hosted
<mripard> like, I I came up with a new project for a mesa alternative, could I host it on fd.o?
<emersion> i don't think we have anything forbidding this
<emersion> technically wayland is an X11 competitor ;)
<mripard> shh, we all know it's actually X12
<mripard> :)

<karolherbst> personally I think it depends on weather the new thing has any significant benefits that it makes sense to provide a collaboration space. I don't think a "it's FDO approved" seal makes much of a difference for initial evaluation or getting people interested. Usually the people familiar with the problem space will get interested or they don't. All
<karolherbst> we can do is "hey, this is an interesting thing, maybe take a look?" but that's already happened just by bringing up the topic. If Applications are willing to accept code targeting alternatives, then it's obvious that others would like to see it being used. Practically speaking hosting something on our infra is a cost for us and I don't think just
<karolherbst> because something is hosted on our infra it gives any credibility to the project itself. A project gets interesting/known when people start to use and talk about it, not because it's hosted on our infra.
<daniels> ^
<daniels> my bar has generally been: a) does it fit with our overall scope and mission, b) is it going to be something which could build a community as opposed to source thrown across the wall, and c) are projects actually interested in potentially using it or is it just someone hacking some stuff together that may never be used

<alatiera> do we have a way in ci-templates to add env vars into the image built?
<alatiera> I didn't find anything so I am guessing not yet
<MrCooper> to the image build, or to the built image?
<alatiera> to the built image
<MrCooper> the image build script should be able to do that?
<alatiera> yes, it's possible to do in cbuild but I don't think we've exposed anything to do it
<alatiera> or at least I don't see it, was hoping someone could verify
<alatiera> would be weird api as well
<MrCooper> I mean the script in FDO_DISTRIBUTION_EXEC
<alatiera> that executes inside the image
<alatiera> basically I am looking for dockerfile ENV or buildah --env
<alatiera> so it ends up in the manifest
<MrCooper> gotcha
<MrCooper> a possible workaround might be storing it in some file in the image, and sourcing that in the job script
swatish2 has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<alatiera> that's the thing I want to avoid, cause trying to make things work ootb
<alatiera> I 've thought about adding an env drop file
<alatiera> or installing things in /usr than in /usr/local
<alatiera> but I also want to add CARGO_HOME and RUSTUP_HOME into the image which don't exist

<fomys_> I am the new VKMS maintainer, and I want to commit this: https://lore.kernel.org/all/20241014145009.3360515-1-mairacanal@riseup.net/
<fomys_> I just added my Acked-by.
<fomys_> How long should I wait before commiting?
<fomys_> How should I commit? From the documentation I found this process, do I miss something?
