<hexdump0815> jernej: apritzel: what is the actual state of the h616 and using full 4gb of ram? when booting my tx6s with a more recent kernel it still only showed 3gb, but maybe my u-boot is too old? or is 3gb still the max useable?
<jernej> I wouldn't know, really

<jernej> I have only one H616 board with 4 GiB of RAM and there I have old U-Boot, without 4 GiB support
<jernej> tbh, I very rarely work with H616

<apritzel> hexdump0815: are you really using a U-Boot before the 4GB patch? You should definitely upgrade then, IIRC we fixed that quite a while ago
<apritzel> I didn't encounter any issues, but TBH haven't *explicitly* checked lately if Linux sees the 4GB. It booted fine, though. I am pretty sure I saw U-Boot proper reporting 4GB, though
evgeny_boger has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<apritzel> hexdump0815: if you upgrade to the latest U-Boot, you get the mainline Linux compatible DTs in $fdtcontroladdr, so don't need to fiddle with DTs anymore ;-)

<libv> sega genesis mini 2 has an AXP pmic as well
<libv> so another R16 clone probably
<libv> mvg just did a quick teardown on video on youtube, and while the soc is in its own, what seems, an rf shield, there clearly is an axp next to it
<MoeIcenowy> libv: it's usual for AXP PMICs to appear on non-AW devices
<MoeIcenowy> my Pine64 Star64 (StarFive JH7110) contains a AXP15060
<libv> MoeIcenowy: oh, that is news to me
<libv> heh, img gpu built in
<apritzel> libv: do people care about hacking those devices, beyond adding new games? The A500 Mini for instance seems to have an H6, IIRC, but I never heard of any attempts to run Linux on it, for instance ...
<libv> apritzel: our wiki is mostly void of devices from the any of the minis
<libv> so yes, people seem not to care
<apritzel> that was my impression as well
<apritzel> one reason I heard is that they are too expensive to use as a general purpose device
<libv> actually, nintendo, a company known to be very aggressive with copyright litigation, was shipping the usualy mix of GPL violating binaries for uboot and the kernel
<libv> for their nes and snes minis
<apritzel> you don't even *want* to see their code, I guess ;-)
<libv> and no-one cares
<libv> well, we did get to see some of that code
<libv> after making some noise in 2015
<libv> but it's the usual allwinner mess
<apritzel> of course, they just copy that as (almost) everyone else does
<apritzel> (the rest is copying Armbian)

<anarsoul> libv: I hope someone will make some noise again
<anarsoul> well, regarding GPL violations, even Ubuntu violates GPL by shipping their libfprint-tod with proprietary binary drivers for goodix fingerprint scanners

<libv> jernej: those things were mostly resolved with some code drop of some sort, before nintendo released the nes mini
<libv> but nintendo still was distributing the blobs last time i looked
<gamiee> jernej: afaik also ISP is reversed (for V3s).

<hexdump0815> apritzel: thanks for the update - will try to update u-boot then during the next days
<hexdump0815> the wiki says that the dma controller in the emac eth can only handle 3gb - does this have any impact if using a 4gb system?
<hexdump0815> this wiki i mean: https://linux-sunxi.org/H616
evgeny_boger1 has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<jernej> no, if dma mask is set correctly
<jernej> (no idea currently)

apritzel_ has left #linux-sunxi [#linux-sunxi]
apritzel has joined #linux-sunxi
<apritzel> hexdump0815: that's not a problem, since the kernel knows about it: the dma_mask is set to 32 bits only (1GB DRAM start + 3GB DRAM length)
<apritzel> hexdump0815: so the kernel will only allocate DMA buffers from the first 3GB of DRAM, and all is fine

<apritzel> hexdump0815: from reading the Wiki I see where you are coming from, I just fixed the wording there
<apritzel> hexdump0815: and jumping from ARMv5 straight to ARMv8 on my serial: I see the full 4GB in my X96 Mate
<apritzel> in both U-Boot proper and Linux
<hexdump0815> apritzel: perfect - thanks for the update
