Mangix: current *has* to flow for an RCD to trip. It's in the name: Residual *Current* Device :)

also neutral and ground are generally bonded either at the grounding point or in the main panel

dwfreed: not in all grounding schemes. And I suspect Mangix meant grounded *downstream* of the RCD, which *can* have ill effects (due to possible earth return currents)
<f00b4r0>
:)
<dwfreed>
yeah, if your ground connects to your neutral before the neutral input of the RCD, if there's any current flowing on the hot line, it'll trip
<f00b4r0>
*nod*
<dwfreed>
and having an RCD is a lot better if there's any likely risk of energizing a metal shell or a person
<f00b4r0>
yep
<dwfreed>
even if the metal shell is grounded

<hell__>
RCDs work by measuring the *difference* between the currents going in and out. ideally that difference should be zero (everything that goes in, comes out), otherwise it'll trip
* hell__
is probably alive thanks to RCDs (got zapped a few times and the RCD tripped)

actually my trust RCD saved my life at least 4-5 times when I was 10 years old and discovering electricity ehehe
* f00b4r0
discovered electricity at a time there were no 30mA RCDs anywhere. Fond memories. Still alive to tell ;D
<f00b4r0>
incidentally, I did not need to "discover" it 4-5 times. Once was enough ;)
<Ansuel>
was a big zap i assume
<robimarko>
Well, guess who has no RCD-s at all
<robimarko>
Luckily I have 2 more DIN rail slots to fit one main 300mA one
<robimarko>
And I will get 30mA RCBO to replace the bathroom MCB
<robimarko>
I wish there was space for Type-2 SPD-s as well

anyone aware of an ipq40xx bug where the switch mangles incoming packets, but outgoing packets are still ok? have this fritzbox in a remote location that looks normal (judging from its outgoing traffic) but doesn't respond to anything sent to it
<Znevna>
maybe.. you know, firewall?
<schmars[m]>
nah it's been running fine for month and this morning disappeared from monitoring
<schmars[m]>
i still see multicast traffic coming from it
<schmars[m]>
* i still see ipv6 multicast and ipv4 broadcast traffic coming from it
<schmars[m]>
(sorry i dont know how matrix/irc bridge handles message edits. i meant: i still see ipv6 multicast and ipv4 broadcast coming from it)
<dwfreed>
edits work
<dwfreed>
just don't use them excessively
