<ndom91>
Quick question, I'm trying to `do-release-upgrade` from 23.10 to 24.04, however the linux-apple-arm kernel packages (from 6.6 -> 6.8) have been held back so `do-release-upgrade` isn't allowing me to continue
<ndom91>
Is there an issue with kernels 6.6+ or would it be safe for me to remove the hold on those and install them, then upgrade to 24.04?
<john-cabaj[m]>
On the contrary, I think we're trying to get people onto 6.8 kernels for both 23.10 and 24.04.
<ndom91>
(just fyi the 23.10 installation is basically brand new and with default / out of the box configs, I just ran the installer and freshly installed it last night)
<john-cabaj[m]>
I'd defer to tobhe on the upgrade process, I'm not well-versed on that.
<ndom91>
Oh okay great, so it seems the hold on those packages came by default
<ndom91>
So might be worht investigating why, maybe get more folks onto 6.8
<ndom91>
Ahh okay so there wasn't an apt-mark hold
<ndom91>
But the headers package's dependencies aren't installable
<ndom91>
libelft64 > 0.144 and libssl3t64 > 3.0.0 :thinking:
<ndom91>
"The following packages have unmet dependencies linux-headers-6.8.0-1008-apple-arm" and then listed those two packages as "depends on, but is not installable"
eslerm[m] has joined #ubuntu-asahi

\o/ nice work Tobias
<eslerm[m]>
which file type was needed?
<john-cabaj[m]>
ndom91: Ah, we were talking about that yesterday
<ndom91>
Seems to be holding up the upgrade from 23.10 -> 24.04 / kernel 6.6 -> 6.8 on a basically clean / default installation of 23.10 off the install script
<tobhe[m]>
right, hm
<ndom91>
Thanks for the link
<tobhe[m]>
can you remove the headers package?
<ndom91>
Good idea, let me check
<ndom91>
Hmm yeah so it'll let me remove it, and in the same batch action it suggests upgrading the other two kernel related packages to 6.8. Buttt it also recommends uninstalling the ubuntu-asahi package then
<ndom91>
So that feels a bit wrong haha. I haven't confirmed the action
<ndom91>
The packages which it recommends upgrading to 6.8 then, specifically, are: (1) linux-image-6.8.0-1008-apple-arm and (2) linux-modules-6.8.0-1008-apple-arm
<john-cabaj[m]>
ndom91: That really should be all you need to run
<tobhe[m]>
yeah better don't remove the meta package
<ndom91>
It's also gonna remove the `linux-apple-arm` package. Not sure exactly what that is, also a meta package for the various kernel packages? Seems like all the important ones would still be there then, just not with the meta package bundling them together :thinking:
<john-cabaj[m]>
ndom91: That's the kernel meta package. Don't want to remove that
<ndom91>
I'm debating runnign it and then just trying to install ubuntu-asahi manually again afterward. Or does that metapackage include the kernel headers?
<ndom91>
Yeah all the important kernel packages themselves would still be there though. Just seems the metapackage is being removed because the headers pkg is also being removed. DOes that make sense?
<john-cabaj[m]>
That meta package includes everything that is currently installed from a kernel standpoint
<john-cabaj[m]>
tobhe I did update from 23.10 to 24.04 at one point. Is that path not working?
<ndom91>
These two packages woudl still be installed, and upgraded to 6.8 though - (1) linux-image-6.8.0-1008-apple-arm and (2) linux-modules-6.8.0-1008-apple-arm. Would that be enough?
<john-cabaj[m]>
ndom91: I think further updates would get cut off without linux-apple-arm
<john-cabaj[m]>
So it might boot and work, but further updates would be broken
<ndom91>
Unfortunately I can't do-release-upgrade to anything (normal or lts prompt) beacuse those packages are being held back, I guess due to the 64-bit time changes
<ndom91>
Okay gotcha, makes sense. I'll hold off then
<ndom91>
Apt is holding the headers package back because these two aren't installable - libelf1t64@0.144 and libssl3t64@3.0.0. Those seem to be the troublemakers
<tobhe[m]>
thanks for letting us know! I'll see if we can find a solution
<ndom91>
*the 6.8 headers package to be specific (linux-headers-6.8.0-1008-apple-arm)
<john-cabaj[m]>
ndom91: tobhe Can we copy these binaries to Mantic to get over the issue?
<ndom91>
No problem, best of luck!
<tobhe[m]>
we might need to add dummy packages to the ppa or sth like that...

<tobhe[m]>
the 24.04 first install experience is nice 🙂
<tobhe[m]>
eslerm: looking forward to hear how you like it
