[19:52] <steev> Caterpillar: what is PAC? || it's one of the things that prevented users from running a stock kernel, according to jlinton

Caterpillar: Pointer authentication, it's a security thing.

Caterpillar: the 'pac' issue on x13s has been root caused to be a bug in the qcom firmware. last thing I heard is that lenovo is aware, and is expected to release the bug fix in a bios update. after the bios update, we should be able to remove the hack currently in use (which disable pac).
<Caterpillar>
ndec: thank you very much for the update. Yes I remember there was something in progress, but I did not know all these details

PAC needs initialisation at each EL so if EL2 forgets to set it up EL1 will fault trying to use it.
<Caterpillar>
broonie: is EL2 now available on X13s !?
<broonie>
No, that's why Lenovo need to do the fix.
<Caterpillar>
ah ok
<Caterpillar>
an offtopic question: anybody will go to FOSDEM? Me yes
<maz>
it is amazing that they are still shipping with this crap at EL2. the 'nopauth' option was supposed to be a temporary hack until they got their act together. clearly, we sent the wrong message.
<ndec>
maz: well, technically they don't ship linux on this SoC, only Windows :)
<ndec>
we are the one who really insist to replace windows with linux!
<maz>
ndec: don't worry, they do the same thing on Android SoCs... and so much for enabling PAC everywhere, something they were pushing for since ARMv8.3...
<ndec>
heh
<danielt>
maz: So much so that it's a Qualcomm document that my search engine offers me when I look for "arm64 pointer authentication" :-)
<maz>
danielt: yup, and the standard PAC algorithm was contributed by QC. mildly depressing.
<steev>
oh, that

steev: sorry missed your message from the other day. I tried with Fedora 36 (5.17.5), 37(6.0.7), and rawhide kernels (6.2-rc1)
<steev>
i've not used 5.17 in a while, but it would be missing a lot of things; 6.0 should work, and 6.2 rc1 works here - i have extra patches on top of 6.0 and 6.2 but none that touch usb
