mps: the default should absolutely 100% be schedutil
<chadmed>
especially once we enable EAS in prod kernels
<chadmed>
no other governor will work as intended in that scenario
<mps>
chadmed: yes, I know. but for now conservative scheduler works fine for me, less heat and somewhat longer battery time
<opticron>
is there work to be done to enable the EAS scheduler?

<j`ey>
I thought it was already on, since we added the dmips stuff to the DT?
<j`ey>
but,.. chadmed just left, and he was the one that added those values to the DT
<jannau>
I think the microwatts values for the operating states are missing
<mps>
do anyone have problem of dim display after exit from dpms blanking on mpb j293 model
<mps>
wit gpu driver enabled
<mps>
with*
cylm has joined #asahi-alt
<jannau>
mps: probably a known issue, workarounds are using wayland or let the display at least 3 minutes in dpms off
<jannau>
if the issue is that the display brightness is minimal after dpms wakeup
<mps>
yes, very dim
possiblemeatball has joined #asahi-alt
<mps>
increasing brightness by one step restore it to normal
<mps>
even writing previous value fixes it
<mps>
and for now I don't use wayland
<mps>
jannau: it is not big problem, just wanted to ask is it appears only for me
<mps>
(and for my daughter)
<mps>
I set hotkey to restore it to normal after wakeup
seeeath has joined #asahi-alt
<jannau>
it seems to be a firmware bug. if the dcp is shutdown less than 3 minutes, dcp doesn't restore the backlight brightness. We update the brightness on wakeup but that doesn't work either
<mps>
aha ok, I will follow more this behavior

another issue on j293 model, left speakers works but right doesn't
<ncopa>
i have 18% battery today, after 5.5 hours of use, with schedutil cpufreq governor
<ncopa>
i havent done any kernel compiles though
<ncopa>
and the laptop feels warm
<mps>
hm, I tested mbp j293 on battery and for one hour it drained only only 3 percent, though not used it for anything serious in this hour
<mps>
j293 is one of the first m1 macbooks
<mps>
and last night I put m1pro in sleep, and in morning after about 8 hours battery drained to 57%
<mps>
though I use gpu enabled kernel on both
<ncopa>
i dont know if it can be fixed with kernel config or other kernel setting
<mps>
well, current linux kernel is not battery friendly ime
<ncopa>
the alpine linux-asahi kernel?
<mps>
asahi kernel
<mps>
nothing specific to alpine
<ncopa>
but only have 6 hours of battery life is pretty bad for this machine
<ncopa>
i would have expected the double
<mps>
as I told I found that conservative cpufreq governor for now is best
<mps>
ncopa: yes, big difference compared to macos kernel
<ncopa>
"In terms of battery life, Apple says the 14-inch MacBook Pro can deliver up to 18 hours of battery life when playing back video. The 16-inch model adds four hours for 22-hour battery life when playing back video."
<mps>
maybe someone could prove me wrong, I will be happy
<ncopa>
thats why i ask here, is 6 hours for mbp 14 normal with asahi kernel or is our kernel config just bad?
<ncopa>
i see we have things like 1000hz etc
<mps>
but regarding a year ago now it is a lot better on battery
<ncopa>
i bet we can tweak our config
<mps>
would like to hear from other distro experience
<mps>
ncopa: when I created config for alpine I did it with minimal options/drivers but over time users asked to enable more features
<jannau>
there is nothing wrong with the kernel or distro. m1/m2 devices are with the current state very energy efficient. m1 pro/max devices not so much
<ncopa>
so 6 hours battery time is to be expected?
<mps>
[PATCH 0/3] Touch Bar and Keyboard backlight driver for Intel Macs
<mps>
sam_: so not related to asahi
<chadmed>
also just fyi EAS is not a silver bullet for the energy consumption on t600x machines. it helps massively dont get me wrong, but the big wins are going to come from PSCI/deep idle and AVD
<chadmed>
AVD is stalled because the firmware is annoying and i think Jamie and R were planning on just writing their own and REing the underlying hardware
