is the kernel asahi 6.4-3 stable enough to push to distros?
mikelee has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<mps>
iirc someone reported on IRC some problem/s
<mps>
I tested it lightly and don't noticed any big problem

<cy8aer>
The sporadic firefox crashes are still there (running on debian) - also with the actual mesa. And because of that there are these buffer blocking messages in dmesg
<cy8aer>
not as much as with the older mesa - 20230706 - but still there.
<mps>
ah, these issues doesn't appear on alpine
<cy8aer>
but that is more a user space problem (mesa) than the kernel
<cy8aer>
ok, otherwise it is stable
<mps>
cy8aer: thanks. so no issue for me to upgrade it in distro
mikelee has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<_jannau__>
cy8aer: do you have any evidence that the firefox crashes are related mesa?
<_jannau__>
the "blocked ..." messages in the kernel log are just informative if anyone runs again in hangs
<cy8aer>
_jannau__: no I just interpreted lina at #asahi-gpu, so more a guess . BUT: I just saw that there is a new Firefox upstream which is not updated in debian unstable. I will wait for this update. It happens that they package a ff in debian which crashes from time to time...
<mikee3000>
I'm experiencing Firefox crashes too (both in snap in distro-installed ESR), I'm also on debian
<cy8aer>
That is version 115.0.3 I wait for.
<mikee3000>
Sysinfo for 'debian': Running inside KDE Plasma 5.27.5 on Debian GNU/Linux 12 (bookworm) powered by Linux 6.4.0-asahi-00514-gbb1ea272fd94, CPU: Unknown model at 1332.0-1956.0/3204 MHz, RAM: 7250/15702 MB, Storage: 47/96 GB, 279 procs, 3.51h up
<mikee3000>
let me know if i can help by testing/providing more information
<cy8aer>
The last actions from lina (with mesa 20230723) reduced the crashes but they are still there.
<cy8aer>
(and it reduced the dmesgs)
<cy8aer>
Another thing @Glanzmann filtered the messages out in his newest debian kernel to avoid the spamming

and thanks to psykose work for rust alpine I can build latest asahi 6.4-3 with gpu enable
<mps>

Are there gpu drivers that are not going to be installed through normal system apt updates? https://git.zerfleddert.de/cgi-bin/gitweb.cgi/m1-debian/ mentions re-running the installer to get new ones, but how do i know when to do it?
<mikee3000>
I'm sorry if this is a stupid question - just point me to the manual, if there is one :)
<j`ey>
mikee3000: did you install before 2022-12-12 ?
<j`ey>
ah no, ignore that
<j`ey>
anyway, no, at this point you shouldnt need to
<mikee3000>
perfect, thank you. is there something like that expected to be necessary in the future?
<j`ey>
I think all the firmware should be available now, in the esp
mikelee has joined #asahi-alt
<mikee3000>
and does that get updated using apt?
<j`ey>
the firmware doesn't get updated by apt no, right now you need to run macOS updates to get firmware updaes (for the global firmware)
<mikee3000>
ah and asahi linux can use macos firmware?
<j`ey>
yes, we have to in most cases
<mikee3000>
thank you for explaining this to me

mps: Yes and I thought it was the buffer blocking problem not completely fixed.
<mps>
downgraded kernel to 6.4-2, lets see will FF crash again
<mps>
though my problem could be related to glib, I use unstable glib version
chadmed has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<cy8aer>
ok, it is testing for me
<cy8aer>
but it is 2.37-6 for both dists actually
<mps>
glib-2.77.0 in my case

are you guys mixing glibc and glib
<sam_>
because the versions you're saying sound like versions of glibc and others sound like versions of glib
<cy8aer>
yep glibc for me...
<cy8aer>
glib 2.76

and after switch to kernel 6.4-2 FF didn't crashed, uptime is 6 hours
<cy8aer>
I did not compiled 6.4-2 but with 6.4-1 FF was stable too for me.
<mps>
also for me was stable with 6.4-1 and now with 6.4-2
