<kdb424> I'm missing something obvious. Running the outreach overlay (gentoo) and having issues with update-m1n1 spitting out cat: '/usr/src/linux/arch/arm64/boot/dts/apple/*.dtb': No such file or directory
<kdb424> For kernel linux-6.3.0_p13-dist I seem to have the files, but for any other kernel I've installed, that seems to not be the case.
<chadmed> please use the real overlay
<chadmed> cant vouch for or guarantee anything in outreach is going to be up to date

<kdb424> Got ya. Wasn't a thing when I did my install that I was at least aware of. Swappin out now. Will report back.
<kdb424> Derp, asahi sources should already be installed. Will give it another look.
<kdb424> Ok, asahi-kernel is coming from that overlay specifically. Checked the logs.
<kdb424> Ripped that out, built the asahi-sources with genkernel, still no luck. I'll keep looking at what could cause this.
<espo> the only thing came across my mind is is the right kernel linked to /usr/src/linux? eselect list kernel ( but not sure about genkernel ) used make / make modules_install / make install / dracut --force all the time :)
<kdb424> I've done eselect kernel and validated symlinks. I'm a veteran of Gentoo (on and off since 2008), but the M1 is newer to me here. If Genkernel fails, I'll just go oldschool. Good call out.
<espo> maybe a try :) never used genkernel with the m1

<kdb424> Something about Genkernel went wrong. That did it it seems. Will reboot to validate, but the error is gone. M1 is an odd one. Thanks for the help!

<chadmed> kdb424: lmfao wdym "wasnt a thing" im the one that wrote all the asahi integration infrastructure initially
<kdb424> I realized that right after I typed that. I'm clearly needing more coffee today. I've even contributed to the installer repo, so I clearly know who you are XD
<chadmed> genkernel is fucked use dracut please
<chadmed> like
<chadmed> all of this infrastructure exists in the overlay, just use it
<chadmed> installing asahi-scripts gives you 100% working dracut presets for free, all you need to do is run dracut with no arguments
<kdb424> I know I need to update how I Gentoo. Old habits die hard.
<espo> gna i killed rust suport in kernel :) dafuq going to grab some coffee :)
<chadmed> gentoo releng are looking to migrate away from genkernel too fwiw
<kdb424> Dracut is workin great. Appreciate you puttin in the work to make it all "just work" and it truly did without issue. Glad it was at least an easy swap out
<chadmed> no worries :) im just glad people other than me are using it all
<chadmed> btw if you want a dist kernel have a look at the open MR on the overlay
<chadmed> havent tested it and its still a draft but it _should_ get you most of the way to an automatic kernel build
<kdb424> I'll give that a look for sure. I never mind waiting on the compile times, but it's always good to know that I have a working config from someone that knows the more exotic hardware. As long as I have a working kernel, and I do now thanks to the help from yourself and espo, it can't hurt to give it a shot.
<espo> and working rust kernel again :) uff.

<janneg> if you have a bootloader which support the bootloader spec (grub2 if configured to do so, sd-boot) you can install sys-kernel/installkernel-systemd-boot and then `make modules_install && make install` will run dracut for you. Please verify if the default kernel parameters are correct
<janneg> I don't remember if I had to configure anything to
<espo> didn
<espo> ups sry, didn't seems to need any configuration tried it quickly installed the package and made a make install and dracut run immediatly
<sam_> janneg: yeah my expectation would be that would work
<sam_> no config needed in your described scenario

<leio> sam_: chadmed: feels like we should have some wiki page on gentoo side for apple silicon, or ask Jared to update things or it'd be OK to touch his user page?

<kdb424> That's how I ended up there as well yeah. Not a lack of general Gentoo knowledge, but exotic hardware I just assume is more different than it is, and followed that, as I'm sure others have as well. Been able to use most things as expected post install though, including using OpenRC instead of systemd
zerdox has joined #asahi-alt
<leio> don't punish yourself, just use systemd, or at least don't see how it'd be expected to use OpenRC

<kdb424> I haven't used systemd for most of my life. None of my boxes run it. Whatever works for you. It didn't work well for me.
