Hi! First time here in #asahi-dev since the matrix bridge was broken a few raids ago
<themadpro>
Shame things had to go down that way :(
<themadpro>
But I digress, I came here to ask what your ideal development environments for Asahi are
<themadpro>
Originally I thought my personal laptop would have been enough but I have ended up bloating it with files to the point where I have something like 150GB free,
<themadpro>
I do have a couple external drives though (no matter how skeptical I may be of Driver status on those)
<themadpro>
Are there any cloud providers for the M-series yet? At the very least that seems like a way to get into kernel programming even if it is quite removed from the user interface
<chadmed>
i dont really do much but fwiw i started out using my old 2017 macbook pro backed by my home server, and have sinced moved to dailying my j314 with gentoo (also supported by the server)
<j`ey>
themadpro: there are some cloud providers, but wouldnt be the easiest way to try do kernel dev
<chadmed>
amazon sells time on 2020 mac minis afaik but im not sure if thats just virtualised arm servers or the bare metal
<chadmed>
also yeah, seems like a real cumbersome way to do kernel work
<chadmed>
having the machine in front of you is really a necessity, you need to be able to access the m1n1 console etc
<jannau>
unless specifically mentioned I would doubt that you can enter recovery os with any of the cloud offerings
<jannau>
it would require an ip kvm for display/keyboard/mouse access in the recovery os
<j`ey>
(needs physical prescene)
<jannau>
in addition they would need to offer a method to hold the power button
<jannau>
at least amazon has a servo to provide virtual/physical prescene

themadpro: what do you plan on doing? my macos partition with two installs (base & hypervisor) is only 100gb
<eiln>
have you installed asahi yet? going through the boot process is a good place to start imo
