<marcan>
jannau: oh you got an M2 Mini already?
<marcan>
nice
<marcan>
I was wondering if I'd have to get one due to the DCP nonsense but I see you're on it already :)
<marcan>
(will probably still get one as the third server node though)

marcan: yes. dcp sillyness is not playing nice so far
<jannau>
the m2 pro mac mini seems to use the same sillyness judging by the adt although apple doesn't advertise 3 thunderbolt/dp-altmode displays
<jannau>
this might be part of the reason why apple stopped bringing up hdmi in iboot
<jannau>
this seems to be sufficiently similar to the hdmi handling on the macbook pros so that we should be able to enable those too once this is working
<marcan>
makes sense
<marcan>
sounds like this is going to be the One New Annoying Thing this time around then
<marcan>
(last time it was MTP)

Just read a comment on heise.de and looked at the youtube video regarding the (bad, compared to the M1 Mini) performance of the NVME 256GB performance on the M2 Mini - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m1XWHFkHgp8 from 4 min 50 sec. if you can stand his waffling and marketing...
<Ry_Darcy>
This was the amount of NVME storage (256GB) I wanted to buy with the M2 Mini btw. Any thoughts?

<ChaosPrincess>
What are you gonna use the machine for
<kettenis>
if you are planning to run Asahi, I would strongly recommend at least 512GB
<Ry_Darcy>
I am not a gamer/developer/hoarder of videos or photos. Being a Mainframer, I am used to Mainframe access/response times. Hence te need for speed when I am paying my bills or looking at the news...
<Ry_Darcy>
te = the
<j`ey>
lol
<Ry_Darcy>
My current M1 Mini has 512GB. I am having second thoughts now vis-a-vis the M2 Mini. How I abhore apple...
<Ry_Darcy>
The current setup is 410GB Debian, 90GB for the unmentionable.
<Ry_Darcy>
I must run a FIO benchmark when I am at home this evening for posterity..
<ChaosPrincess>
So, just general "office" use?
<ChaosPrincess>
Then io speed shouldnt matter
<jannau>
neither should the difference between m1 and m2
<ChaosPrincess>
Also, isnt mainframe response times - submit batch job overnight, get results in the morning? :P
<Ry_Darcy>
@Jannau agreed. But I will not settle for an underpowered NVME SSD either. Read some of the comments about the "new" NVME speeds being offered for the M2 Mini. Not impressive.
<Ry_Darcy>
@ChaosPrincess basically, home office use and the occasional kernel compile. Light use, if you would.
<Ry_Darcy>
That was in the 70's lady. Not any more.
<ChaosPrincess>
Anyway, i only seen the slides in that video and havent heard his commentary (forgot headphones today), but if it is sequential - then it literally does not matter
<ChaosPrincess>
random low queue depth io is what affects the perf you want
<Ry_Darcy>
Frank Zappa's "cheepnis" comes to mind. Fool the punter, make her/him think he is getting more for less. Oh dear.

Personally, i wouldnt buy a machine with less than 512gb even if it has a replaceable ssd
<ChaosPrincess>
and apple stuff is soldered, which is technically replaceable, but you won't do it
<Ry_Darcy>
Just as well you did not hear his nattering. There are other sources for this news however.
<ChaosPrincess>
and yes, the 8/256 model seems like a "we want to advertise low prices" play
<Ry_Darcy>
I am not a great collector of things, hence my modest (256GB) requirements.

I think that if you dont work with video or similar disk filler, you won't notice the perf difference
