<threerik[m]> out of curiosity does m1n1 allow you to modify core clocks or voltages for the m1/pro/max?
<threerik[m]> I doubt it but was wondering
<jannau> threerik[m]: clocks as in the cpu's p-staes yes, see src/cpu.c and proxyclient/experiments/cpu_pstates.py
<threerik[m]> woah, cool!
<threerik[m]> do the chips boot properly with pstates other than the default (more specifically higher lol)?
<jannau> sure, why wouldn't they. the e-cores are already at the highest p-state (~2GHz) fter iboot. p-cores are at the lowest p-state but m1n1 switches them to p-state which ~@ GHz too
<j`ey> I think threerik[m] wants to overclock?
<threerik[m]> not sure id risk doing it to be honest but yeah I'm curious if that's even possible
<threerik[m]> initially I was under the impression that the chips were hardware locked to that frequency or something
<sorear> I'm interpreting the question as "does the Apple hardware allow people to play the silicon lottery or is the DVFS functionality hardware locked to only known safe voltage/freq combinations"
<threerik[m]> pretty much yeah

<marcan> threerik[m]: I think you're asking about overclocking. no.
<marcan> you can change the core clocks/voltages to supported combinations (p-states); the actual selection is handled by hardware
<marcan> there may be some way of manually overriding that, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's locked down for security reasons, since DVFS is a notorious attack vector
<marcan> either way if there is one, we don't know what it is
Dcow_ has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
<marcan> one thing you *can* do is disable some DRAM power management features (more than macOS already reduces them under load) which under some rather meaningless synthetic benchmarks does give better numbers, but I'd be surprised if the impact is worth it in any real workload

<jannau> (more than mild) overclocking on a system where you can't just replace the CPU and lose most likely all data on the internal SSD since the last backup doesn't look like a attractive idea to me

<Glanzmann> jannau: IIRC the trackpad works with libinput, mtrack and synaptics xorg driver, which of them do think is the best?
<Glanzmann> /clear/clear
<jannau> no idea but I guess libinput is the way forward. no idea about how well the xorg drivers work. I switched to wayland and used trackpoints and external mice
<Glanzmann> jannau: I see, thanks.

<Glanzmann> I also used lenovo trackpoints in the past a lot (even on workstation - Lenovo keyboards with trackpoints). I disabled touchpads in the past completly. But the apple touchpad seems to be really good. But if I have the chance I also use an external mouse these days.

<marcan> brcmfmac series sent to the maintainers/lists/too many people
<marcan> let's see what they say :)
<CristianMgheruan-Stanciu[m]> In the latest update there were a couple more things to be done before the GPU, which one will be the next?
<marcan> SMC
<CristianMgheruan-Stanciu[m]> * @marcan In the
<CristianMgheruan-Stanciu[m]> Thanks
<landscape15[m]> Does anyone know a place to get a Ubuntu rootFS with GNOME preinstalled?
<landscape15[m]> I only found a raspberry pi image in the official repo
the_lanetly_052 has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<Glanzmann> landscape15[m]: Probably the easiest way is to just run debootstrap on a ubuntu
<Glanzmann> landscape15[m]: The one for raspberry pie will also be fine because they're binary compatible.
<Glanzmann> And it is the same architecture.

<joske> I tried the raspberry image with Ubuntu, but the installer just crashes with no way to run even a terminal
<Glanzmann> joske: I would not a installer, just tar -xzf the image or run debootstrap and off you go.
<joske> It's very simple to make such a rootfs. Mount the image with kpartx, copy everything from the second partition to a folder and tar it
<Glanzmann> Everything that is missing or needs updating can be done with apt.
<joske> Glanzmann: after only a few minutes with gnome, I'm reminded why I don't use it 😁
<joske> Glanzmann: there is not really an installer but the Ubuntu arm64 image runs an installer at startup
<joske> (just like Manjaro in fact)
<landscape15[m]> Glanzmann: thanks. I was asking because Corellium uses a modified raspberry pi image.
<landscape15[m]> I couldn’t install a desktop environment with tasksel, using debootstrap. It give me Error 100 (due to udisks2)
<Glanzmann> landscape15[m]: So I would create an initial install with debootstrap
<Glanzmann> and than you can just do apt-get install gnome
<Glanzmann> joske: What window manager do you use?
* Glanzmann uses fvwm2.
<joske> Mate
<Glanzmann> I see.

<landscape15[m]> Glanzmann: ok thanks, I’ll try and tell you.

<j`ey> NightRaven[m]: 2nd machine

<NightRaven[m]> But kind of confused on it
