<jmr2> Regarding wifi patch 11/34, is there something wrong in the commit message? The "more than"/"greater than" part ?
PhilippvK has joined #asahi
<rkjnsn[m]> I think the "more than" is superfluous.

<mps> marcan: any idea when the 'pcie enable devices' will be 'added' to m1n1
<mps> iiuc it should be activated before kernel starts
<jannau> mps: probably never, it'll be handled by the in kernel SMC driver
<mps> jannau: ah, by SMC. ok
<mps> last night I got idea to 'piggy back' one small arm32 SBC to m1 to run pcie_enable_devices.py when I boot m1 :)

<mps> jannau: about keyboard, old apple keyboard driver have options to exchange some keys (Fn with left ctrl and alt with command). do you plan to add something like this to m1 driver
aleasto has joined #asahi
<_jannau_> mps: drivers/hid/hid-apple.c (which we use) has options for that as well
<mps> hmm, I tried but it didn't worked
<mps> will check again
<mps> oh, looks like this works only when built as module and not in kernel

<jmr2> One of the recent LKML posts confirms what I had started to suspect, but don't fully understand: "There is a global recovery image as well as per-OS recovery image."
<jmr2> How do you choose to boot from any of these, and where are they stored?
<jmr2> I guess that the per-os ones are in the same partition as the OS they back-up, and they auto-start if the main OS of that partition fails to start, but that you can't really manually select those in the boot picker, but you can choose them prior to rebooting - which is what the asahi installer is doing?
<jmr2> I also guess that the global one is the one you can reach via the "option" icon in the boot menu?
<jmr2> And that's why the per-os one needs to have the same OS version as the main OS in the same partition, and the global one will always match the most recent version of MacOS that was ever installed on that Mac (unless you do a DFU restore - and possibly even then)?
<jmr2> Do I understand this right ?
Gaspare has joined #asahi
<marcan> jmr2: this changed in 12.x, but ignoring the obsolete stuff, it boots whatever is the recovery image for the currently selected default boot OS
<marcan> so if you hit options in the menu you get the recovery for whatever the default boot is
<marcan> the global one is only a fallback
<marcan> and this is why you need to set the asahi partition as default, then reboot again into 1TR (which will now be the paired version), then run step2
<marcan> in 11.x we could do the install without any second reboot, but that's no longer possible (for entirely reasonable security reasons)
<marcan> they are stored in the OS container Recovery volume
MajorBiscuit has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<jmr2> So if you don't know what's the default OS, you don't know what's booting when going into recovery. That's... weird. Anyway, thanks for the explanation!

<jmr2> Just had a look at the recovery partitions on the Linux (12.0.1) and MacOS (12.1) volumes. Similar, but different. Two "profiles" under /boot for the Linux one, but only one in MacOS. The dmg file is ~2GB on Linux, but <1 on MacOS - but when mounted, they're both close to 2GB. Intriguing.

<ChaosPrincess> if it boots the paired recovery for the active os, what is the globally installed recovery used for?
jmr2 has joined #asahi
<jmr2> j`ey: that'd make sense. On 12.1, the dmg is less than a GB, but GetInfo on it when mounted states that it contains about 2GB of stuff. Maybe they just discovered hard links :-D
<jmr2> ChaosPrincess: that was just answered - "the global one is only a fallback".

<landscape15[m]> ChaosPrincess: if no os can be booted, or some required partitions are corrupted, 1TR is the only way to restore a working machine. If even 1TR doesn’t work, you need to perform a DFU restore.
<landscape15[m]> However, I think it’s very difficult to corrupt the global recovery.
<tpw_rules> ...not really?
