<bluetail> its a bit tricky

<nicolas17> bluetail: why idevicerestore?
<nicolas17> it doesn't sound like they lost access to macOS
<Mik_> nope I didn't lose access to macOS indeed
<kode54> Mik_: suggestion for future, always enable sshd and you can log in if it boots but the session isn’t locally accessible
<Mik_> only Fedora is broken and can't boot but I can access the recovery of macOS and start macOS
<nicolas17> can't you select Linux recovery from grub?
<nicolas17> I don't remember if that's set up by default
<Mik_> kode54: where do you enable it please?
<kode54> nicolas17: Can’t do that with usb keyboard on mini yet, can you?
<nicolas17> oh D:
<nicolas17> well that sucks
<Mik_> yup I didn't find it :/
<kode54> I meant if you reinstall
<Mik_> oh ok thx
<kode54> remember to enable the ssh service
<nicolas17> kode54: any way to boot from external storage if you have no keyboard?
<kode54> it’s unfortunately not as handy to recover since you can’t boot arbitrary boot media
<Mik_> is it possible to boot on a usb stick with a linux distribution and mount the disk?
vmeson has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<kode54> Grub can boot it
<kode54> nut unfortunately, on a mini, it has no usb keyboard access
vmeson has joined #asahi
<Mik_> what do you mean by no usb keyboard access? :o
<nicolas17> Mik_: on a MacBook you can change grub settings using the keyboard
<kode54> I mean the control has to be provided by the boot loader, which doesn’t have a usb stack?
<nicolas17> but on a Mac mini you use an external USB keyboard, and grub doesn't support it
<kode54> MacBooks have a different interface for the keyboard
<nicolas17> so you can't type
<Mik_> I can access uboot commands by taping on a key on the keyboard before it boots so maybe I can access grub right?
<Mik_> I mean my keyboard is working in usb 3
<nicolas17> hm
<nicolas17> kode54: can you boot from external media from uboot instead of from grub?
<Mik_> I tried earlier but I don't know if uboot can do it and how to do it properly
<Mik_> my live usb is on the usb 2.0 hub and it's not lighting up when I have access to the uboot console. moreover, I can't manage to find it with the "usb" command on uboot
<nicolas17> hubs could make things tricky
<nicolas17> but either way I don't know how to even prepare a suitable live usb :D
<Mik_> well I mean the usb 2.0 hub of the Mac Mini

<Mik_> would someone still be available to help me please? :) I have an issue while booting on Fedora after modifying /etc/sddm.conf file and now I get the following error message on a black screen after the boot loads : "Failed to start asahi-branding-fix Fix fedora asahi branding packages"

<Mik_> should I try to install again Asahi Linux via the install command on the website please?
<Mik_> or is there a risk of bricking my mac mini
<chadmed> you cannot brick an apple silicon mac, they can be revived using DFU mode
<chadmed> but you should of course back up all of your important data first as a DFU restore will wipe everything

<Mik_> ok tyvm guys! someone told me about it tonight. I will use idevicerestore then thank you so much!
<PaulFertser> Mik_: if you can still boot recovery and macOS there's no need for idevicerestore really.
<PaulFertser> Also, why do not you just boot Fedora to text mode and modify /etc/sddm.conf back?
<Mik_> oh ok welp I'll use macOS restore then
<PaulFertser> Just one messed up config is a strange excuse to reinstall the whole OS :)
<Mik_> PaulFertser: how to do it please? I only have access to uboot commands when I boot Fedora
<bluetail> Mik_ I managed to make my mac m1 unbootable with mac restore
tacitPanda has joined #asahi
<bluetail> I then needed DFU and idevicerestore
<Mik_> oof
<bluetail> and I needed the proper packages for idevicerestore cause at first it didnt work
<bluetail> on a mac mini its super awkward
<bluetail> hold power while you replug cable :D
<bluetail> to get into DFU
<PaulFertser> Mik_: isn't u-boot booting GRUB?
<bluetail> and you need the right usb c port to connect on your second device
<PaulFertser> bluetail: good thing in Mik_'s case nothing is unbootable.
<bluetail> ah ic
<tacitPanda> Hey all! Total noob question here, if I install Asahi via cli on macOS will it install in a way where I can boot from it or would it only be available via cli? I cant find any confirmation on that but I may not be looking in the right place
<PaulFertser> The DFU remark was an answer to a specific question (a risk of bricking), not a suggestion to recover in that specific case.
tramtrist has quit [Read error: No route to host]
<Mik_> PaulFertser: no idea I don't see it and when I press shift to display the boot loader it doesn't work. are the usb already working at this point?
<j`ey> tacitPanda: if you install via the CLI you can choose to install KDE or GNOME
<PaulFertser> tacitPanda: it'll be available as a boot option on startup
<tacitPanda> Ah ok thank you
pb17 has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<tacitPanda> Haven't connected to an irc in years lol thanks folks
<j`ey> I think it sets itself as the default boot option
<PaulFertser> Mik_: please just wait for someone who actually runs Fedora on Apple Silicon to answer. There must be a trivial way to boot in text mode, I just do not know specific instructions.
tacitPanda has quit [Quit: leaving]
<j`ey> you can press 'esc' *after* the u-boot countdown
<j`ey> to get into GRUB
<PaulFertser> Ah, so GRUB is there just with hidden menu
<PaulFertser> And the regular way works.
<PaulFertser> Holding Shift was good in LILO times.
<j`ey> Mik_: ^
<Mik_> perfect tyvm guys!!
<Mik_> I'll let you know when it is fixed :)
<PaulFertser> It's not going to fix itself so power to your elbow :)
