<whot> karolherbst: problem is the domain denylist isn't accessible via API (afaik) so we can't easily automate this. We should have a git-based deny list (for backup) that we can copy/paste into the gitlab config but also read for the auto-purge

<dwfreed> It's presumably in the database, though, yeah?
<whot> presumably somewhere, yes
<whot> if the rails console can access the field then we can script it
<whot> though not sure how comfortable I'd feel with a script that takes a text field, parses it, then purges accounts based on that unseen - one typo and you wiped all your users

<karolherbst> yeah....

<karolherbst> I think if the script would display first what accounts it would purge (sorted by domain)
<karolherbst> or prints statistics on what to purge or something
<karolherbst> whot: anywya, I've added like 4 or 5 new entries, so just pick the last
<karolherbst> or maybe the last 10
<karolherbst> or until you don't hit any deleted accounts
<karolherbst> might also want to double check if those domains are indeed spam
<karolherbst> whot: anyway, I think I like the idea of having a git repo, so others can double check the domains
<bentiss> starting the minor gitlab upgrade I mentioned last week now (so that gitlab can push its new release today ;-P )
<mupuf> bentiss: ROFL
<bentiss> OK, migration done. welcome to gitlab 17.2.1, with hopefully less (security) bugs
<karolherbst> nice
<karolherbst> (now gitlab is also fast again for the next 12 hours)
<karolherbst> uhhh..
<karolherbst> rambler.ru shows up more and more in account sign-ups...
<karolherbst> any suggestion on what to do with it?
<karolherbst> feels like if we block that one, we might as well block gmail.com 🙃... maybe we should check if there are legitimate accounts coming from rambler.ru?
<karolherbst> yesterday it was 70 accounts in the last 14 days, today we are at 95
<dwfreed> bentiss: most likely the next update will be august 7th
<karolherbst> ohh
<karolherbst> damspam sanitized all those accounts profile 🙃
<karolherbst> ahh yeah.. it's all spam...
<karolherbst> whot: anyway, if you set up the git repo and everything, I can then enter the domains there.
<karolherbst> but I'd also like to see network traffic stats if that's information we can get, because I've heard from other hosters, that AI based spam can account for up to 80% of network traffic or load on a system just handling nonsense requests

<mvlad> ah, and I did looked into gitlab first, but nothing popped after searching for 'drm-misc'. Thanks MrCooper!
<mvlad> so basically we retired cgit right?
<sima> yup
<mvlad> sima,, reasoning for looking for drm-misc is that we're seeing some VKMS regression with write back connectors from 6.4 onwards. i-g-t kms_writeback tests hangs with waiting for fence like: (kms_writeback:196) CRITICAL: sync_fence_wait failed: Timer expired
<mvlad> we just recently switched from 6.3 to 6.9 and I am going backwards to see what introduced it
<sima> uh yeah that doesn't sound great
<sima> also maybe good excuse to look into enabling more vkms tests in the gitlab ci stuff
<mvlad> hmm, I don't suppose mairacanal or melissawen actually test the kms_writeback with VKMS

<mvlad> mairacanal, with 6.3 I get a pass, while 6.5 I don't. Not sure if this is VKMS issue or there's something related to WB connectors. Haven't yet been able to try 6.4 yet to narrow it a bit more.

<pinchartl> is https://www.reuters.com/markets/deals/google-backed-software-developer-gitlab-explores-sale-sources-say-2024-07-17/ something we're worried about and/or planning for, or are we just waiting to see what would happen ?
<alanc> I thought one of the reasons we stuck to the free edition and turned down their offer of a free enterprise license was to avoid headaches if something like this happened and they stopped giving it to us for free
guludo has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<pinchartl> it does avoid immediate problems in that case indeed, and would make forking possible
<pinchartl> so wait & see may be the best approach, as there's no short term risk
<pinchartl> maintaining a fork may be costly, but that's something that can be considered later
