dz1, well, it's completely up to your compositor where it wants to display to. Wayland has nothing to do with that.

many existing compositors have different "backends": one that presents to KMS and uses input devices, another that creates an X11 window and presents and gets input there

dz1: #sway-devel (libera) is the place to discuss wlroots development, but wlroots has an x11 backend
