<tobhe> efi shell works, grub doesn't
<jhovold> tobhe: do you also have the 64 GB variant?
<tobhe> looks like it, yes :)
<robclark> jhovold: not yet.. it may be an x1e issue or a7xx issue? I can't easily go back to a much older kernel to check

<freekurt[m]> In Ubuntu's official installer ISOs for Oracular, the generic ARM desktop image now supports the X13s. https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/status-of-ubuntu-support-for-lenovo-thinkpad-x13s/44652
<gabertron> Yea tobhe I also have the 64GB variant and can only boot via efi shell
<gabertron> And have been struggling to get the display working
<gabertron> I tried debugging grub a bit but it seems my grubaa64.efi never gets far enough to print anything

<tobhe> with grub-mkimage and set debug=all

<tobhe> now trying to load them one by one and find which one is borked
<freekurt[m]> I am using armbian's latest release with jhovold's newest kernel but I can't get audio or video files to play in Firefox ESR or the newest Firefox Nightly. Anyone know why this might be happening? I was able to get this to work using the pmOS install.
<freekurt[m]> this is referencing armbian Debian Trixie on the x13s, by the way.
<freekurt[m]> I assume I should just open up an issue on armbian's github, but it would be nice to at least have a little bit of an idea of what to tell them to look into to try to fix this.
<freekurt[m]> Alternatively, does anyone have a vanilla Debian build that utilizes jhovold's newest kernel? The debian install page for x13s looks way too complicated and is probably outdated.
<freekurt[m]> I'd rather just put an image on a usb and boot it.
<steev> the debian install page is not at all complicated, though it looks like it is. that's how i installed mine, and i just build the kernel myself
<freekurt[m]> I love the x13s pmOS support, but i am more familiar with debian and glibc and want an image that "just works". Maybe I bought the wrong laptop to have that be an option.
<steev> once the 6.11 kernel enters debian, that might be the case for the x13s (6.12 for the camera though, since 1 patch is needed); for video though, you do need to pull the firmware from windows
<steev> unless armbian are distributing it (which they shouldn't, but eh, licensing licensing)
<steev> for audio though, all you should need is alsa-ucm-conf installed
<JensGlathe[m]> tobhe: No idea. But V6 of the image will have a boot option for T14s.
mrkajetanp has joined #aarch64-laptops
<JensGlathe[m]> I could personally only test on the HP X14 (works), and it was reported to boot on the Yoga 7, and Vivobook S15.
<gabertron> tobhe yea I was going down a similar path looks like you are ahead of me
<steev> freekurt[m]: also the firmware... and assuming you're starting the remote proc daemons (that should go away with 6.11+ kernels)
<gabertron> Btw for reference I have a T14s non 64GB model and it works great with grub โ€” but also has a different display so itโ€™s not the only change
<gabertron> But yea sounds like we are getting closer
<freekurt[m]> @steev: whether something is complicated or not is pretty relative.
<steev> if you have the ability to read and type, it's not at all complicated
<tobhe> funny. so it looks like adding any module to grub-mkimage makes it go dark, with no modules at all I get some debug output
<steev> that's a bit odd
<freekurt[m]> @steev: the instructions don't include building and upgrading the kernel
<steev> because those aren't part of an install?
<steev> those instructions are "git clone <johan's git> -b <branch-you-want>; cd <wherever>; make johan_defconfig; make bindeb-pkg"
<steev> why would the debian instructions include how to do something not in debian? that's silly
<freekurt[m]> i just wish https://aarch64-laptops.github.io had boot images or complete instructions
<gabertron> tobhe: I wonder if there is like a module loader or something that runs super early or if itโ€™s just static code linked in
<freekurt[m]> to allow less technical users to get a working laptop going
<tobhe> it looks like that was a red herring. managed to include normal and smbios and they work
<tobhe> part_gpt and ext2 don't
<gabertron> Ah ok good news
<freekurt[m]> @steev: i have no idea what a "remote proc daemon" is
<gabertron> Normal includes a big chunk of stuff

<JensGlathe[m]> hp x14: boldly booted with the Vivobook dtb, boots from type-c, brings up screen with the right res (splat for unknown panel), touchpad works, keyboard doesn't. ath card gets recognized but not activated because no calibration data yet in the board-2.bin, but I'm sure I will find some usable ones (ath11k has mine). It worked basically ootb. Did not fetch additional windows firnwares (yet). I did one test session on Monday, had
<JensGlathe[m]> no time for it since. Will do on Sunday I guess. Somehow confident to get the kb up, too.

<JensGlathe[m]> Will do an install try on the ssd, too. I guess the boot woes will go away then

<freekurt[m]> to install ubuntu on my ssd. so far so good. now just trying to figure out how to upgrade the kernel. might make it into debian at some point. thanks for the suggestion
<JensGlathe[m]> usually just sudo dpkg -i *.deb on the directory with the debs
<JensGlathe[m]> take a look at the boot parameters in the image though. Also, you need /etc/iniramfs-tools/modules and /etc/initramfs-tools/hooks/x1e-firmware (or so) copied before.
<JensGlathe[m]> /etc/flash-kernel/db is also a good idea
<JensGlathe[m]> before installing all this in chroot
<JensGlathe[m]> its a bit technical
<JensGlathe[m]> you can set the machine you're on with /etc/flash-kernel/machine mine for example reads Windows Dev Kit 2023. It needs to be the name from the dt for the box.
<JensGlathe[m]> With this installed into your chrooted file system the dpkg install would also set up the right dtb
