<Leidenfrost> Hi all
<Leidenfrost> User question, is there a long road before the GPU drivers become feature-wise enough for a composited desktop?
<Leidenfrost> Anyways, love the work you are doing :)
<Dcow[m]> Leidenfrost: it's impossible to tell you that now.... (full message at https://matrix.org/_matrix/media/r0/download/matrix.org/hmqcLNqwoLkyGyBXwneqPTER)
<Dcow[m]> btw, lina is doing GPU work stream tomorrow, join it's always interesting
<Leidenfrost> So now what's left is the kernel space driver. That's great news
<Dcow[m]> userspace is still actively under development, but AFAIK it passes like 97% of GLES tests
<Dcow[m]> but you never know how much time might be needed for even last 1%
<Leidenfrost> Dcow[m] yeah I subscribed to their channel. I usually let it playing on background while I work
<Leidenfrost> I'm sure there's a lot of work left no only on that last 1% but also for optimization and that kind of work that a gpu driver usually needs (looking at radeon foss drivers rn)
<Leidenfrost> But as long as the drivers is usable enough for leveraging the gpu for normal desktop usage, I'm buying an M1 pro and installing asahi as a daily driver
Gaspare has quit [Quit: Gaspare]
<Dcow[m]> as I said, it not done yet and if you not bought it yet you might wait for october and m2 devices probably)
<Dcow[m]> at least for m1 to be discounted)
<arrowhead10[m]> You can get m1 mini for sub 400s now on ebay they come and go… I think for what it offers it’s pretty good value
<Leidenfrost> Yeah the m1 mini is pretty affordable. But I specially want it to be a laptop with dual or tiple head support.
<Leidenfrost> I'm not very fond of MacOS though

<Leidenfrost> I mean. I "accept" it becuase it's a Unix system after all, but it has no change against a more lightweight distro like Arch or Gentoo
<Dcow[m]> it's offtopic here
<Dcow[m]> let's move #_oftc_#asahi-offtopic:matrix.org

<lina> Dcow[m]: so yuni apparently found out the other day that "passes like 97 of GLES tests" does not imply "apps actually work"... ^^;
<lina> hopefully she can improve that while I work on the kernel side
<lina> *97%
<alyssa> lina: she? what about me? I wrote the dang thing! :p
<alyssa> ("And look at how bad a job you did." "...")
<lina> no comment~
<Dcow[m]> <del>oh, that drama again...</del>
<alyssa> Dcow[m]: look it's a sore subject :p
<Dcow[m]> I was as much diplomatic as I can!
<alyssa> Dcow[m]: not you, *her*
<alyssa> ("I didn't realize I walked into Mean Girls, Reverse-Engineering Edition")
<Dcow[m]> I feel bad
<alyssa> Dcow[m]: Why?
<marcan> lina, alyssa (and yuni): let's keep it cool, 'kay? :-)
<Dcow[m]> alyssa: bad joke/meme and offtopic flooding
<alyssa> You're good :)
<alyssa> (About the memeing. Please keep the offtopic to the other channel :) )
<Leidenfrost> (trying to stay ontopic) passing GLES tests don't imply that apps actually work?
<Leidenfrost> kernel driver aside

<alyssa> yes and no
<alyssa> passing 97% of GLES2 tests does not mean 97% of apps work
<alyssa> at best, it means more or less 97% of features tested by the GLES2 conformance tests work
<alyssa> but what's tested is a small subset of what's possible in GLES2 (the combinatorics suck)
<alyssa> and of course y'all don't want GLES2, you want GL4.7 and Vulkan 1.4 and whatever :v
<Leidenfrost> Yeah I'm aware of that. But I always guessed that compositors used a small % of most OpenGL extensions, and as long as those are covered, desktop apps that are not games are fine
<alyssa> I expect compositors are ok
<Leidenfrost> Got it
