<Ariadne> so one thing i've noticed with these M1 macs is, sometimes they won't wake up, and then you have to hold the fingerprint sensor / power button down for 5 seconds and reboot it
<Ariadne> is that a MacOS bug or is it a bug in the hardware
<chadmed> i have not heard of this happening to the handful or so of M1 users i know. is it reproducible at all or intermittent?
<jn> good question, but i think linux isn't at the point where suspend-to-ram works, so it's can't be used to rule out a macos bug yet
<chadmed> linux str barely ever works even on my pre-T2/secure enclave intel/efi macbook
<Ariadne> its happened to me three times now :)

<Fanfwe> Ariadne: never happened to me. I've had my M1 since december of last year and it's my main laptop which I use every day. I've been experiencing some kernel panics though, but I suspect this is caused by the developer preview of Parallels.
<chadmed> was there anything you recall doing differently when it started happening?
<Ariadne> i suspect the machine was under high memory pressure because i just let browser tabs accrue until performance gets so bad that i restart firefox
<chadmed> sounds like maybe an update to macos causing this, or could very well be the elusive nvme drive weardown caused by the excessive use of swap
<chadmed> ah yeah itd be the swapfile thing then i reckon
<Ariadne> my nvme drive is fine
<Ariadne> i got this machine after 11.4 was released
<Ariadne> well, fine in theory anyway
<chadmed> odd behaviour then, could it be a memory leak causing OOM during "sleep" somewhere
<chadmed> modern macs dont actually sleep unless you set a kernel flag disabling macos's connected sleep features

<Ariadne> i'm hoping to have some time to play with asahi this week
<Ariadne> i really dislike macos :D
<chadmed> it used to be a fantastic unix tbh, the last great release was probably lion or mountain lion
<chadmed> it started becoming bloated and generally crap when apple started trying to unify all their userspace APIs. i understand and appreciate the niche their software fills, but its not for me
<alyssa> on macOS none of my userspace works, but on linux, none of my kernelspace works
<alyssa> [sweaty guy with red button.jpg]
<chadmed> i will still buy macbooks because it seems PC manufacturers have given up on making high quality machines, so the work being done here truly is indispensible
<chadmed> i tried to replace my x86 machine with a raspberry pi 4 but trying to get that little mongrel of a broadcom chip working with anything but the official pi distro is an exercise in futility
<chadmed> so the next best thing for normal users looking to start ditching x86 is make apple silicon macs appealing to people who want more than fisher-price macos
<sven> alyssa: :D
<Ariadne> chadmed: rpi4 works well with alpine
<Ariadne> we provide official rpi kernel for it, same kernel source as the official distro

<chadmed> oh thats cool!
<chadmed> trying to build a libre gentoo system around it filled me with such rage and hate for the platform that i actually got pretty far into designing a pc-like open hardware platform based around RV64GC cores
<dottedmag> chadmed: So I'm not the only one thinking macos peaked at 10.7-10.8.
<chadmed> socketed SoC, PCIe, libre firmware, PC form factors
<chadmed> dottedmag: i think most sane people probably feel the same way
<dottedmag> chadmed: That explains it: I've got quite a lot of insane friends!
<dottedmag> That is, friends who don't find anything wrong with recent macOS.
<chadmed> any software born after 2012 cant run. all they know is webassembly, kubernetes, leak memory and die()
<chadmed> (that was a terrible execution of that joke im so sorry)

<Fanfwe> Ariadne: Not sure about the memory pressure either. I have like... close to 200 tabs open with Firefox on my machine (a 16GB RAM model, though) and it's dealing with it just fine, no problem.
<Ariadne> this is an 8gb model
tertu has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<chadmed> there was some noise a while ago about the 8gb model having issues excessively paging out to the swapfile, so id definitely be investigating possible memory leaks or other memory system issues
<chadmed> this is likely just due to macos being so bloated and generally bad now so im not really sure what you can do to prevent it while using macos other than try to use less software, which shouldnt really even be considered an acceptable solution
<Ariadne> well i could just restart firefox more frequently :P

<TheLink> I have >1000 tabs open in firefox and no such issues
<TheLink> I had issues with cloud sync software like dropbox or pcloud and such
<TheLink> these were causing stupid behavior for me
aleasto has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<marcan> Ariadne: I've never noticed that, but what I *have* noticed is that on the mac mini sometimes USB just fails and stops working
<marcan> and I have to reboot the thing
<marcan> (this is the type A ext controller)
<mini> I get that with thunderbolt on the mini sometimes as well (under macOS)
<marcan> after being asleep, it'll refuse to wake up from the keyboard, and doing it manually it's dead
* marcan off to sleep, will go through the PRs tomorrow
<marcan> sorry for the week off, stuff happened...
