Hi, I would like to understand how to run adt.py script.
<ruach[m]>
I successfully ran the shell.py in pythonscript/tools/shell.py but cannot run that script

For anyone interested it appears to be CONFIG_BLOCK=y also USB devices only detected if plugged in *before* boot...

amw: uh, that sounds broken
<sven>
config_block should work fine
<sven>
and that "device detected only before boot" sounds like that known quirk that only usb report only works at most once right now
<amw>
sven: Not sure where to go next, perhaps trace down the exact piece of code - it also happens when I boot under the HV - but I don't know how to trace the access other than via clobbering it with printks

amw: it's a page fault and it seems to crash within some pata setup code which is rather strange

you can try to disable PATA_LEGACY but this really shouldn't be happening
<chadmed>
why is it enabled in the defconfig?

<amw>
Yep CONFIG_PATA_LEGACY is the one - disabling that and it's ok - still needs to be plugged to probe my USB Key, I note it was marked "EXPERIMENTAL" ...
<chadmed>
odd that its still unstable considering its been around since 2.6
<chadmed>
even more odd that your usb drive uses PATA and doesnt just present as a usb mass storage class device, is it really old?
<_jannau_>
that problem should be gone with 5.14, still strange that it is enabled in in the arm64_defconfig
<chadmed>
yeah imma be real i think the defconfig for our kernel at this stage should absolutely minimise the total kernel footprint until the new stuff is tested and completely stable, otherwise this is going to keep happening if the kernel is building and enabling all these silly components by default for stuff that's not even present on the machine
<chadmed>
this is so much easier to do on these macs than on x86 kernels since we can be sure that the machines are almost always going to be identically configured hardware-wise
<_jannau_>
there's just a single defconfig in-tree for arm64, but I should just publish my arch linux apple-m1 kernel PKGBUILD
<chadmed>
yeah its odd that the asahi fork doesnt have a custom/sane defconfig. maybe ill work on that when my mac mini comes
<chadmed>
since most of the good stuff is upstreamed anyway now ill probably work with 5.13 and just take stuff out bit by bit starting with the most ridiculous stuff like nvidia graphics and all the silly network drivers that are set to builtin for some reason
<amw>
I think I'm still missing a kernel config for udev / debian's initrd as I get a complaint about a socket type / creation failed
<Guest1153>
Only the initial bring up has been upstreamed so far

jannau: Your config is the only one that defines what udev wants so it will create devices for my USB key - so I might be able to run multi-user Linux on an external drive - perhaps another day - thanks
