<piroko> uhhh I'm very confused. I'm using systemd-networkd, but I don't have a wpa_supplicant entry for my home network, yet I'm connected to it
<piroko> does the mac wifi firmware have creds stored in nvram or something?
<piroko> oh. I'm using iwd apparently haha

<lesiuk> Do I need to do anything special to use USB3 on USB-C ports?
<lesiuk> lsusb -t shows that my USB3 SSD is working at USB2 speeds.
<lesiuk> But when I connect it to USB-A port it works at full speed.
<lesiuk> Other than that asahi looks rock solid.
<lesiuk> I am using it as my home server / gitlab runner.

<dhewg> wpa_supplicant supports wpa3 just fine, it's just the ancient wpa_gui that doesn't allow to set it
<dhewg> but there's wpa-cute as alternative frontend, which does

<piroko> yeah I just didn't realize that network-manager can use iwd as a backend. so I was very confused when my networking kept working despite disabling network-manager and wpa_supplicant haha
<piroko> this is good though; I can mess with the BandModifier5Ghz iwd parameter to hopefully get it to lock onto my work's 5GHz instead of 2.4GHz and maybe make my bluetooth headphones stop skipping :D

<bluetail98> does DDC/CI work on asahi ?
<sven> don’t think so
<jannau> lesiuk: which kernel version? `uname -r`
<sven> lesiuk: please upload your dmesg somewhere
<sven> and that’s also helpful :D
<jannau> it's included in the full dmesg
<lesiuk> 6.1.0-asahi-2-2-ARCH
<jannau> that should work. just to make sure: is the cable a usb-3 cable?
<jannau> bluetail98: no
<bluetail98> ty
<lesiuk> I will connect this HDD using the same cable to my MacBook
<bluetail98> I had similar issues like lesiuk
<lesiuk> i mean SSD and let's see if I will get USB3 speeds on osx
<bluetail98> the type c ports behave weirdly yes
<bluetail98> lesiuk also m1 mac and a ugreen usd enclosure?
<bluetail98> ssd*
<bluetail98> btw, no issues running a 2.5gbps usb c to 2.5gpbs rj45 adapter from Club 3D
<piroko> \o/ yessss. iwd setting took effect: wireless is now locked onto 5GHz, and my bluetooth audio is chugging along smooth as silk
<piroko> I assume this issue is known? associating with 2.4GHz causing bluetooth to cut out?
<bluetail98> that feel when the log answers all the questions anyways

<sven> yes, we still haven’t investigated WiFi and bt coexistence enough yet
<lesiuk> @bluetail98: SanDisk extreme SSD
<lesiuk> It supports USB3
<j`ey> piroko: yup it's known, that's why I told you to switch to 5ghz :D
<bluetail98> lesiuk have one lying around
<bluetail98> if needed can reproduce
<sven> the dmesg looks okay, does the disk work when you connect it to macOS?
<lesiuk> It can be the cable
<piroko> j`ey: :) cool cool cool
<lesiuk> Because I can't get USB3 speeds on osx too
<lesiuk> Let me check with different cable
<bluetail98> sven do you want me to reproduce on a 500gb sandisk extreme pro?
<sven> bluetail98: no
<lesiuk> Fk, my fault, it was the cable
<lesiuk> Now I am getting 884 MB/s reads
<lesiuk> Thank you guys, you were very helpful
<bluetail98> cool.
<lesiuk> Asahi is great for home server
<lesiuk> I never had home server so performant and quiet
<bluetail98> lesiuk I paired it with a 10 bay hdd enclosure and I already added 2x16tb and 2x20tb
<bluetail98> but thing is, thats a bit louder :D
<bluetail98> still have to tweak that one
<bluetail98> thinking about hot glue and a fan extender, along with 'native' quiet fans cause no fan-temp control
<lesiuk> I am using it as a build server for my personal projects
<lesiuk> So disk performance is kinda important
<lesiuk> I have already 7 SSDs attached
<lesiuk> 4 of them inside 4 disk bay
<bluetail98> I have 8 2tb ssds attached, silly me
MajorBiscuit has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<bluetail98> I really should go (only) hdd cause its just backup
<bluetail98> backup / nas
<lesiuk> The only thing I am missing currently is f2fs support.
<lesiuk> But it's really minor issue.
<bluetail98> explain f2fs like I'm 5
<lesiuk> It's filesystem designed for flash storage
<lesiuk> Most of android phones are using it
<bluetail98> why use it over btrfs?
<lesiuk> It prolongs SSDs lifetime compared to ext4
<bluetail98> but compared to btrfs?
<lesiuk> Its full name is flash friendly file system.
<lesiuk> Hard to tell.
<lesiuk> Probably not that big of a difference
<lesiuk> But android developers choose it so maybe it's a little better
<lesiuk> I was using it on my old sever
<lesiuk> And my observation was SSDs with f2fs lasted longer than those with ext4.

<bluetail98> lesiuk you havent seen the kernel panics when plugging in storage devices on the usb c port
<bluetail98> eg raidsonic/icybox devices make the kernel panic but only on c type ports, crashing u-boot
<bluetail98> longstanding issue, no fix in sight yet. Some also reported some usb sticks todo that
<bluetail98> s/do/cause
<sven> that sentence makes no sense. the kernel isn’t running yet when uboot still has control
<bluetail98> I need to snatch some of your basic knowledge sven :D
<bluetail98> yea it makes no sense, sorry
<bluetail98> anyhow, this is what I've meant. https://github.com/AsahiLinux/u-boot/issues/4
<lesiuk> I have icybox 4 bay enclosure connected to USB-C port.
<lesiuk> No crash yet.
<bluetail98> I had the issue with the 5 bay one
<bluetail98> I recently switched it to a 10 bay and havent re-tried the usb c connection yet. its a different model
<bluetail98> lesiuk wanna come over to #asahi-offtopic ?
<bluetail98> or talk a bit through private messages?
<bluetail98> Feeling that we flood this chan too much
<lesiuk> Sure, let's switch to offtopic

<Retr0id> I encountered an amusing bug yesterday. I booted asahi, and for whatever reason the keyboard and trackpad drivers didn't initialise properly so I couldn't log in (but my muscle-memory had already typed my password before I realised)
<Retr0id> so of course, I turned it off and on again
<Retr0id> and during the next boot, I got a bit of a surprise when I saw the uboot prompt get interrupted by my password being typed in...
<Retr0id> seemingly, the unread keystrokes from the previous boot had been buffered, and then spat out again at the next opportunity (which happened to be in uboot, I guess)
<Retr0id> anyway, I continued the boot and everything worked fine ever since, but I just thought that was an interesting failure mode
unicordion has joined #asahi
<mps> Retr0id: yes, this happened to me few times, though I didn't typed password but other keys
<mps> looks like firmware buffers keystroke even on power down/up till they 'consumed' by something
<mps> and I don't have idea how to reproduce this in controlled manner

<mps> bluetail98: I have no idea how to force keyboard to 'not work' state on boot
<bluetail98> mps you misunderstood me. You program a virtual keyboard on the raspberry pi, attach it as "keyboard" and play back a sequence till you reproduced the behavior
<bluetail98> oh, I thought it was 'just' the sequence... sorry

<unicordion> Please excuse my ignorance, I get a "<jemalloc>: Unsupported system page size" when trying to use certain docker images. Ex "mcr.microsoft.com/azure-sql-edge:latest". Is there an easy workaround to be able use this image?
<tpw_rules> not really
<waldi> no. jemalloc needs to be fixed to work with page sizes != 4KiB
<waldi> but this is unlikely to happen
<jannau> only feasible workaround is to use them in a vm with 4k kernel
<jannau> at the moment
<unicordion> OK, thanks. I can workaround it with postgresql
