<micro_> (that there's a full co-processor)

<micro_> So we can talk to the chip, ask it for data, but we have to deal with the co-processor.
<micro_> But we can bring it all online.
<micro_> I'm just shocked the mics aren't done vs the GPU being usable for 90% of people
<micro_> I can understnad the speakers not being ready as there's no protection circurtry in M1 macs

<ayke_> Usually with these kinds of projects, what gets done is what people like to get working first. In this case, apparently there were multiple people who wanted to work on the GPU but nobody was interested in the microphone.
<ayke_> I mean, if you wanted to you could do it yourself or hire someone to do it. Other than that, it's "you get what you pay for" ;)

<ayke_> I'm sure it'll be done eventually, when the people doing the work run out of more interesting things to reverse engineer.

<elvishjerricco> So yesterday I asked about nested virtualization on macOS, but really the goal is just to have one machine with a linux OS capable of virtualization, and a macOS installation that doesn't necessarily need virtualization. Is it feasible to virtualize a macOS guest under an asahi host?

<winter> I don't think anyone has done such a thing (as in, aarch64 macOS VMs on a non-macOS host), sadly.
<sven> you can run their vmapple kernel in single user text mode
<sven> running the UI requires significant effort to implement apples paravirtualized gpu protocol
<sven> and running the bare metal kernel won’t be possible inside a Linux vm since that would require to run (amongst other issues) Linux itself in GL2 and which won’t happen
<ayke_> 8bc34asven: "you can run their vmapple kernel in single user text mode" <- it's possible to run a single user text mode kernel on Linux? Is that what you're saying?
<j`ey_> Im not sure if anyone actually tried that from asahi?
<sven> I’m saying that the special kernel apple ships for VMs doesn’t require any of their fancy extensions and should just “work” in any aarch64 vm
<sven> but the UI won’t come up because there’s no gpu it can use

<elvishjerricco> Hey, I just saw the speakersafetyd thing. I'm sure this has been discussed already, but is there any documentation or TL;DR on why this was done in user space instead of in the kernel driver? Seems like it'd be easier to guarantee safety in the kernel.
<ar> i'm not involved with it, but i'd guess that userland code is easier to iterate on, and userland audio APIs may be easier to deal with
